LEXINGTON, Nebr. (July 5) - The Independence Day weekend ended with the fireworks known as racing at Dawson County Raceway in Lexington on July 5. David Murray, Jr. of Oberlin, Kan., Casey Werkmeister of Maywood, Eric Steinmark of Kearney, and Bryan Herrick of Curtis sparkled as they rocketed to the top of their respective A Features. Despite starting back in the sixth row on a slick track, David Murray slipped by Steve Aitken of Cozad for the lead on lap four of the IMCA Modified A Feature. Cautions kept the field tightly compacted, and Charley Brown of Maxwell and Chad Dolan were able to keep close to Murray. On the last restart, Dolan got away from Brown and made a charge to deny Murray his fifth consecutive Dawson County Raceway win. His effort ended a car length short at the finish line. Vince Leibert of Lexington came from the eighth row to finish in fourth place. Aitken finished in fifth place. Brown, Jamey Kennicutt of Gothenburg, and cash dash winner Jay Steffens of North Platte were the three IMCA Modified heat races. The IMCA Stock Cars used the whole track during their A Feature, and exciting racing through the field was the norm. Heat winner Casey Werkmeister took the lead at the start of the race and let the other seventeen starters slice and dice for position. By lap six, rookie Cale Osborn of Cozad was fighting hard to keep second spot from Mike Nichols of Harlan, Iowa and Charley Brown. Brown would eventually win that battle and attempt to track down Werkmeister. He would get too high in corner four near the end of the race, causing to drop to a poor finish. Werkmeister kept working his line and broke the five race win streak Nichols’s had. Jason Smidt of Minden quietly snuck his way forward, and managed to get by Nichols late for second place. Cale Osborn finished in fourth place, ahead of brother Colton Osborn. The other IMCA Stock Car heats were won by Shane Stout of North Platte and Jason Koch of Cambridge. The IMCA Hobby Stock A Feature had the “M-80Explosion of The Night” after the 5m car of Frank Mladek rolled his car coming out of corner four and onto it’s side on lap five. The Cozad driver threw his helmet out of the car, crawled out the top, pushed his car over, tore off the nose of the car, and drove it into the pits where his crew changed a tire. He made it back out for the restart and finished in the top ten. Eric Steinmark dominated the top spot of the race, as he jumped out to the lead from the third row on lap one and had everyone trying to catch his car. They couldn’t, and Steinmark earned his first win of the year. Jeromy Wagner of Kensington, Kan. missed the problem spots on the last lap to finish in second place. Tim Miller of Grand Island was third. Sixth row starters Dillon Thompson of Campbell and Terry Eatherton of Gibbon finished in fourth and fifth places. Steinmark and Kyle Bond of Gibbon were the heat race winners. Bryan Herrick doubled up on wins in the SportMod class, winning the heat race and A Feature. Jimmy Weigel of Oberlin, Kan. paced the first half of the race, then handed it over as he got sideways in corner two, missing Herrick by inches. His car would then die, catch on fire, refire, and then ran without incident for a second place finish. Mark Kinne of McCook was third. Dawson County Raceway will be back in action during the Dawson County Fair on July 19. The gates will open at 5 PM, and the races will start at 6:30 PM. Because of the fair, the race cars will pit on the track infield that night.
