LEXINGTON, NEBR. (July 19) - It was Dawson County fair time in Lexington to go along with races at Dawson County Raceway on July 19. The races were the final event of the week, and had more excitement than the demolition derby, more horsepower than the horseshow, and more hits than Sawyer Brown. David Murray of Oberlin, Kansas, Casey Werkmeister of Maywood, and Kyle Bond of Gibbon were the blue ribbon winners, as they took the A Feature wins. Seventeen IMCA Modifieds started the twenty lap main event of the night. Bo Egge of Kearney dropped to the bottom of the track to move from third to first on the opening lap. He had a strong lead on the field when the first of two caution periods bunched the field up to him. With the double file start behind the leader, Chuck Stryker of Eddyville and David Murray aligned on the bumper of heat winner Egge. On the restart, Stryker initially earned the second spot, but Murray found some bite at the bottom of the track and moved back by. He then was able to get alongside of Egge and take the lead at the half way point. One more caution set Egge and Stryker on Murray’s tail, and on that restart, Egge nearly gained revenge, but Murray had his line and used it to drive away for his sixth straight win at the track. James Moore of Gibbon capped off a strong run with a fourth place finish. Heat winners Steve Aitken of Cozad and Chad Dolan of Gibbon finished behind him. The cars in the IMCA Stock Car A Feature were running so fast, many of the motors let go. Heat race winner Casey Werkmeister set the pace after he passed brother Kyle on the second lap of the race. Colton Osborn of Cozad was close to matching his speed, as he moved into second place. Bob Hoing of Cozad was the first driver to have pieces of his engine scatter on the track. Two laps later, point leader Mike Nichols of Harlan, Iowa had his sights on the top two drivers when his engine expired. Werkmeister was almost a lap from victory when the caution flag waved again after then-fourth place runner Jeff Whiting became the third driver to put on his list of things to this week “Find a new engine for the car.” This gave Osborn and Jason Smidt of Minden a chance to taking the lead from Casey, but his engine stayed in one piece and brought him to the finish line in first place. Osborn remained in second place at the finish. Shane Stout of North Platte moved from fifth to third in the closing laps. Smidt fell back to fourth place, and Kerry Jones of North Platte earned the fifth spot. Rookie Cale Osborn of Cozad won the other Stock Car heat race and the cash dash. The crowd was stunned in the first IMCA Hobby Stock heat race after the car of Dillon Thompson of Campbell rolled down the front stretch after contact with the disabled car of Zach Canas of Cozad. When that heat started back up after the cleanup, the fans had barely settled back down when Dan Rheome of Kearney flipped his car wildly off of lap three. Fortunately, both drivers walked away from the carnage formerly known as race cars. Kyle Bond won that heat race, driving a car he borrowed from Brandon Stange of Cairo. The good luck for him continued in the A Feature, as he took the lead on lap one and never looked back. Cody Blessing of Kearney, another heat race winner, ran with Bond for many laps. It appeared he would finish in second place, but in the closing laps, lost control, smashed into the inside dirt berm, and had to call it a night. That allowed Lexington driver Hunter Cantrall to move into second place, and that is where he stayed. Jim Buss of Blue Hill finished in third place, ahead of Tim Miller of Grand Island and heat winner Jim Rayburn of Gibbon. Next week at Dawson County Raceway will be the third special of the year, as the BST IMCA Modified come to town to run with the regulars. The IMCA Stock Cars and IMCA Hobby Stocks will run as well on July 26. The gates will open at 5 PM, and the races will start at 6:30 PM, Central Time. July 19
