Stout Beats Storms and Stock Cars at Lincoln County Raceway
By Darin Racek

NORTH PLATTE, Nebr. (August 15) - Although there was some trepidation about the skies, the show at Lincoln County Raceway was able to completed on August 15, about twenty minutes before the storm hit the fairgrounds. Charley Brown of Maxwell, Shane Stout and John Webster of North Platte, and Leland Stute of Benkelman hit the track ready to race and won the night’s A Feature events.

Corner four appear to have an invisible hand reaching for cars during the IMCA Modified A Feature, and hand appeared to like cars near the front of the field. While racing for second place and trying to track down leader Andrew Dillenburg of North Platte, Jeremy Herbst of North Platte went for the ride on lap six. On the next green flag lap, leader Dillenburg became the victim to the force, and that handed the lead to Cole Hodges of Ogallala. By that time Charley Brown had moved into second place, and after a couple of laps of working on it, was able to take the lead from Hodges and held on for his second IMCA Modified win in two weeks. Hodges won the spirited battle for second place between he, Jeremy Frenier of Fort Morgan, Colo., and Robby Haines of Benkelman. Jim Mlady of North Platte finished in fifth place.

The heat races were won by North Platte drivers Tony Schultz and cash dash winner Jay Steffens.

The IMCA Stock Car drivers must have been thinking more about the impending storm than racing the A Feature, as it took three tries to get one lap completed. Shane Stout, who broke a rocker arm during the heat race, took second from Brandon Clough of Wallace and the lead from heat winner Kyle Werkmeister of Maywood coming around corner four on lap three. The track was dry slick, which took away the advantage a driver with a more horsepower would have, and that was to the advantage of Stout, who thought he may have broken another rocker arm during the feature. Stout’s left front tire also had a slow leak, adding to his adversity. In spite of it all, he had a healthy lead over the field on the last lap, and earned his first Lincoln County Raceway feature win of the year. Clough, a heat winner, was the runner-up.

Travis Tilford of North Platte, Charley Brown (also a heat winner), and Mikey Dancer of North Platte rounded out the top five. All eighteen starters finished the race.

There were fifteen laps in the IMCA Hobby Stock A Feature, and the drivers ran the race without a caution. On the opening lap, Dan Morash won the battle of North Platte, getting by Rick Eller for the lead. Leland Stute worked his way into second place and tracked down Morash. The two put on a close race for several laps, with Morash having the slight edge. On lap nine, Stute had a stout run out of corner two on the heat race winner, drove to the lead, and on for the win. Austin Davis of Benkelman was also able to get by Dan for the second spot. Greg Hoing of Johnson Lake, also a heat race winner, finished in fourth place, while Corey Cruzan of Maxwell finished in fifth place.

John Webster took the lead of the Mini-Sprint A Feature and stayed ahead of the field for the entire ten lap event for his second win of the year. Jeremy Herbst started in the back of the field, yet was able to do enough passing for the runner-up position. Arden Myers of McCook had the show in third place, and J. R. Way of Lexington had whatever a person would call fourth place. Ashleigh Larson of Aurora, Colorado was unable to finish the race, but the thirteen year-old was credited with fifth place. Myers was the heat race winner.

The next night of racing at Lincoln County Raceway will be Saturday night, August 22. The gates open at 5 PM, and the races will start at 7 PM, Central Time. Two bicycles will be given away at intermission for youngsters.
