LEXINGTON, NE (August 23) - Championship night was a wild night at Dawson County Raceway. There was at least one car that rolled over in each of the three regular classes during the night, and you didn’t know if there was going to be a pileup at the end of every feature race. Bo Egge, Mike Nichols of Harlan, Iowa, and Kyle Bond of Gibbon rolled back into victory lane for a second straight week. Bryan Herrick of Curtis piled another feature win onto his pile of wins this year. Chad Dolan of Gibbon, Nichols, and Tim Miller of Grand Island were determined to be the track champions for the three regular classes. Jamey Kennicutt of Gothenburg started out with the lead of the IMCA Modified A Feature, but early cautions kept the field close. It also aided Bo Egge on his march from row three to challenge for the lead. After the second caution period, Kennicutt changed his line around the track, which opened the door for Egge, who drove on for the win. Kennicutt was relatively unchallenged for second place. Chad Dolan took the third spot. Heat race winner Jim Mlady of North Platte got by James Moore of Gibbon for fourth place with only two laps to go. The other IMCA Modified heat race winner was Jay Steffens of North Platte. The previous night in North Platte, the IMCA Stock Cars went caution free during their A Feature, and they started off looking as though they might repeat. Cale Osborn of Cozad took the lead from Kerry Jones from North Platte on lap three, and was maintaining a decent lead with the green flag laps. The green run ended on lap seven, which grouped the field again. Heat winner Mike Nichols took advantage on the double file restart by passing from row three to second spot on lap eight, then taking the lead from Nichols on lap nine. With six laps to go, Casey Werkmeister of Maywood, who was running in third place, had his car shoot off corner two and roll. Casey was able to walk away. That moved Jason Smidt of Minden into the third spot behind Osborn and Nichols. He was unable to get by Osborn for second place, who could not deny Nichols the win. Jason Koch of Cambridge started back in row seven, yet finished the race in fourth place. Colton Osborn of Cozad finished in fifth place. Denny Egge of Kearney was the other IMCA Stock Car heat race winner. Cautions tend to breed cautions when the IMCA Hobby Stocks race. Dillon Thompson of Campbell was showing the rest of the nineteen car field the way around when the caution light came on lap four after the engine of heat race winner Jim Buss of Blue Hill blew up. After the race resumed, Dan Rheome of Kearney and Greg Hoing of Johnson Lake got together in corner two, collecting several other cars, most notably Terry Eatherton of Gibbon, who had his car roll over off of the track. Eatherton was able to walk away from the wreck. During the yellow, Thompson went off the track to remove the hood from his car after he lost a hood pit. That put him to the back of the pack. Heat winner Frank Mladek of Cozad inherited the lead and did a good job leading the field around the track. However, Kyle Bond got tired of following, and on lap twelve, was able to get by the Cozad driver. Three laps later, he had his repeat win. Mladek finished behind him in second place. Points champion Tim Miller of Grand Island finished in third place, with Jim Rayburn of Gibbon finishing in fourth. Tyler Andreasen of Grand Island barely beat Thompson for the line for fifth place. Thompson’s brakes were out, and could not slow down when he caught up to a slow car heading for the pits at the end of the race. It was a hard hit that did a lot of damage to his sixth place finishing car. The other Hobby Stock heat winner was Kearney’s Cody Blessing. Bryan Herrick returned to Dawson County Raceway to race in the SportMod class, and was able to sweep the heat race and the A Feature. Mitch Hamilton of McCook matched his best feature finish in a SportMod, running in second place. Jeromy Wagner of Kensington, Kansas normally races a Hobby Stock, but after losing two engines recently, decided to bring out his SportMod. He brought it home in third place. Matt Marquardt of Tekamah opted to bypass his regular track in Greenwood and come out to Lexington, where he finished in fourth place. Dawson County Raceway will host the Cornhusker Classic on Saturday and Sunday, October 4-5. It will be an IMCA sanctioned event for the Modifieds, Stock Cars, and Hobby Stocks. The Saturday race is scheduled to start at 4 PM, and the Sunday race at 3 PM. The gates will open two hours prior to racing. Admission in the grandstand will be $12.00 for adults and $5.00 for the kids for both nights. Pit passes will be $25. Registration fees will vary with the class.
