Brown, Davis, and Myers Are Champions of Lincoln County Raceway
By Darin Racek
NORTH PLATTE, NE. (August 29) - It was the final night of racing for the
2009 season at Lincoln County Raceway, and the drivers put on a great show
for the fans to remember during the winter. Charley Brown of Maxwell, Casey
Werkmeister of Maywood, Austin Davis of Benkelman, and John Webster of North
Platte will be warmed over the winter by the memories of winning the A
Features on the final night of the season. Brown, Davis, and Arden Myers of
McCook will get to enjoy trophies during the winter to remind them of their
2009 points championships.
Charley Brown took the lead on lap one of the IMCA Modified A Feature from
Andrew Dillenburg. Dillenburg stayed near Brown until he was passed by
Brandon Hagan of McCook. At times during the consecutive eighteen green flag
laps, Hagan would reel in the Maxwell driver, but Charley would pull away.
Near the end of the race, Brown’s car began to smoke, and a caution with two
laps to go bunched up the field. Whatever the reason for the smoke, it had
no affect on Charley’s run to the feature win and the points championship.
Hagan finished in second place. Jim Mlady of North Platte got by Dillenburg
on the final restart for third place. Jeremy Frenier of Fort Morgan, Colo.
finished in fifth place. The two IMCA Modified heats were won by the North
Platte tandem of Tony Schultz and R. C. Heil.
A pileup on the opening lap of the IMCA Stock Car A Feature containing Brett
Gartrell of Dickens, heat race winner Kyle Werkmeister of Maywood, and Dan
Eller of North Platte shuffled the alignment of the field. Once they got to
racing, Brandon Clough of Wallace took command of the race. He showed the
way until Brent Gibson of North Platte was able to get underneath him on lap
ten. Clough became embroiled in a three-way battle for second with fellow
heat winner Mikey Dancer of North Platte, and Casey Werkmeister, who, on the
original start, was back in row eight. Dancer was out of contention after he
cut a tire, which also cost him positioning in the battle for second place
in points with Colton Osborn of Cozad. The two were tied for second place in
points going into the night, but with Dancer finishing one spot behind
Osborn, giving that spot in the points to Osborn. Werkmeister got by Clough
and challenged Gibson for the lead. Gibson could almost envision his first
IMCA Stock Car A Feature win, but the clutch began to slip, and on the last
lap, Werkmeister slipped underneath him in corner one to steal the win.
Gibson finished in second place, ahead of Charley Brown, who picked up the
IMCA Stock Car Championship to go with his Modified one. Todd Chrisman of
North Platte survived an early spin to finish in fourth. Clough was fifth.
A dozen IMCA Hobby Stocks started their twenty lap event, and they managed
to put on a clean race that had only one caution period. Dan Morash of North
Platte had hopes of gaining his frist win, and at lap four, he was showing
the way. The track was decent both high and low, and Corey Cruzan of Maxwell
showed how good the low side was when he snuck underneath Morash on lap
thirteen, bringing Austin Davis with him. Despite the low groove being
preferred, Davis went to the high side of corner four with two laps go,
surprising Cruzan as he went by. Austin sealed up the championship with his
victory two laps later. Cruzan finished in second place. Leland Stute of
Benkelman passed Morash for third place, meaning the top four finishers in
points finished the final A Feature of the season the same way. Jack Sherman
of Kearney was not in fifth place in points, but did finish the race in
fifth. Cruzan and Stute won the heat races.
The night before in Hastings, John Webster rolled his Mini-Sprint, damaging
pieces of the suspension, but surprisingly, did not bend up the wing. After
spending all day Saturday working on his damaged car, he took it out on the
field, winning both his heat race and the caution-free A Feature. Josh
Lipker of Cozad finished the race in second place, ahead of Jeremy Herbst of
North Platte, Jake Lipker of Harvard, and Shane Sundquist of Loomis. While
Arden Myers spun during the feature and had a not-so-good finish, the finish
helped him secure the points title.
Bicycle races were held for the kids at intermission. Cortney Enger won the
8 and under girls race, while her brother Tyler won the boys 9-12 race.
Kaleb Hodges picked up the trophy for the win in the boys 8 and under race.
After the races, mechanics races were held with the big cars. Gary Herbst
won the Modified event, Eric Hasenauer picked up the win the Stock Cars, and
Roger Morash showed the way for the Hobby Stocks.
A banquet will be held sometime this fall, but is yet to be determined.
Promoter Ed Milne thanks the fans, racers, track help, and the track
sponsors for their participation in the 2009 racing season at Lincoln County
Raceway.
