McCOOK, NE (April 2) - The temperature didn’t co-operate with McCook Speedway on April 2, but the wind did go down to make it more bearable in the stands. Drivers from Colorado, Kansas, and Nebraska were itching to get some racing in, and came to the action-sized 3/8-mile track to get their race itch scratched. Will Brack from Mead, Colo., Lloyd Meeske of Champion, Litton Stute of Benkelman, and Tyler Frye of Belleville, Kan. were paid the most scratch, as they won the four A Features. The IMCA Modified A Feature was cut to fifteen laps after seven caution periods slowed the first eleven laps. Will Brack had the lead from the opening lap, and never got to see the stoppages behind him until he came back around the track. With four laps to go, Brack felt the breath of heat winner David Murray, Jr. of Oberlin, Kan. on his backside, and the two became embroiled in a hot battle for the top spot. Murray almost got under Brack once, but it wasn’t enough to rattle Brack from his line. Jeremy Frenier of Fort Morgan, Colo., finished third, ahead of Robby Haines of Benkelman and Ronnie Wallace of McCook. Frenier and Brandon Hagan of McCook were the other IMCA Modified heat race victors. After a couple of cars had issues coming to start the race, the IMCA Stock Car A Feature went caution-free. Lloyd Meeske passed Bob Chalupa on lap four for the lead, and was later joined at the front by fellow heat winner Dave Plowman of Gretna. After Plowman showed Meeske he was there, the driver of Champion drove his car a little harder to garner his first win of the year. Cale Osborn of Cozad finished in third, ahead of Jesse Taylor of Fort Morgan, Colo., and Chalupa. Winning is becoming a habit for Litton Stute in the IMCA Hobby Stock division. Stute won an A Feature in Abilene, Texas in February, then showed he could do closer to home Friday night at McCook Speedway. He was followed many laps by his dad Leland, yet the younger proved to be the stronger on this race night. Dalton Dolan of Oberlin, Kansas finished in third place, ahead of Cody DeWester of McCook and Anthony Martin of Wilcox. Dolan and Todd Pankonin of Benkelman were the heat winners, with Pankonin also garnering the win in the Taste of Texas BBQ Cash Dash. The IMCA Northern SportMod count was a little light, much to the chagrin of Tyler Frye, the 2009 IMCA National Northern SportMod runner-up. Although he didn’t earn the points he hoped to, he did show the crowd why he finished like he did the year before, beating the local stars in the heat and feature. Bryan Herrick of Curtis finished second in both races. Matt Matson of McCook beat Chad Young of Imperial for third spot in the feature. The next night of racing at McCook Speedway will be in two weeks, Friday night, April 16. The gates open at 6 PM, and the races will start at 8 PM, Central Time.
