Brown Slays Stocks at Lincoln County Raceway By Darin Racek NORTH PLATTE, NE (May 1) - Lincoln County Raceway held the season opener on May, with cars from four states showing up to race. While the track showed some signs of the weather issues the track prep crew have had to battle, the drivers battled on the track, putting a good show on for the fans. David Murray, Jr. of Oberlin, Kan., Charley Brown of Maxwell, Jason Stephens of McCook, and Bryan Herrick of Curtis showed up and battled their way to A Feature wins. With racers driving in more than one class, the IMCA Stock Car A Feature was the first feature to be run, and the drivers set the excitement bar high. Cale Osborn of Cozad and the three heat race winners, his brother Colton, Charley Brown, and Mike Nichols of Harlan, Iowa, were the four that got out front and raced each other hard for position. Brown enjoyed the lead for several laps after passing Cale for the lead. However, Nichols, last year’s national runner-up in Stock Car points, got by the Osborn brothers and Brown to lead at lap ten. Brown got back underneath him for the lead on the next lap, bringing the Cozad crew along and shuffling Nichols to fourth. Something broke in the rear end of Colton’s car, forcing his car to break and he needing a tow to the pits, leaving the other three to play. Cale found a groove to get by Brown with three laps to go, and Nichols slid into second. Does that mean Charley Brown was out of contention? No. Going into corner three with less than two laps to go, Brown was third. Coming out of corner four, he snuck under both Nichols and Osborn for the lead and held them off for one more lap for the victory. Cale Osborn held onto second place. Casey Woken of Ogallala finished in fourth place, while Maywood’s Kyle Werkmeister finished in fifth place. The early stages of the IMCA Modified A Feature had people’s minds flashing back to ten years ago when Ronnie Wallace of McCook and David Murray would race each other tooth and nail every time they were on the track together. Wallace began with the lead, while Murray worked his way from row four. Cautions aided Murray to get on the tail of Wallace’s car, and the duel began. Murray took the lead from his fellow heat race winner on corner two of lap four, only to have Wallace power drive the high line of corners three and four to take it back. The Kansas driver was able to retake the lead after a lap four caution, and once he had control of the track, he drove away for the win. Jeremy Herbst, North Platte, came on late to finish in third place, only to have his car scale light, handing the spot to Don Hagan, Jr. of McCook. North Platte drivers Jay Steffens and Josh Sabin of North Platte were credited with fourth and fifth positions. The other heat race was won by Charley Brown. Cole Hodges of Ogallala won the cash dash.
The track needed a little water before the IMCA Hobby Stock A Feature, and the drivers had to drive a little more careful early in the race. Corey Cruzan of Maxwell slid into the lead on the opening lap. Sophomore driver Dalton Dolan of Oberlin, Kan. found his nerve and his way to the lead on lap four. Heat winner Cody DeWester spun on lap six, bringing out the race’s only caution. When the race restarted, Jason Stephens passed Dolan for the lead. Dolan would come back to pressure the McCook driver, but could not deny him of his first IMCA Hobby Stock A Feature win. Dan Morash of North Platte finished in third place and made it a sweep of black cars in the first three spots. The orange car of Cruzan finished in fourth place, while Rick Eller’s white and blue car brought the North Platte driver to the finish line in fifth place. Bryan Herrick started in the back of the IMCA SportMod A Feature after engine woes knocked him out of the heat race. However, it only took him three laps to find his way to the front. Quite a bit was happening behind him, especially with five laps to go. Matt Caudillo of North Platte was enjoying a top three run until his car broke on the track and needed help getting the car back to the pits. On the restart, Colton Osborn and Max Pollmann of Trenton got together, which caused Pollmann’s car to break. As he went high down the front straight, Austin Davis of Benkelman ended up squeezed into the wall. The accident brought out a red flag to get things cleaned up. Osborn, the heat race winner had to go to the back, but worked his way into second place at the finish. Herrick had checked out by that time, and took the first Lincoln County Raceway SportMod A Feature win. Shane Stout of North Platte finished in third, ahead of Chad Young of Imperial and Tim Cooper of North Platte. The next night of racing at Lincoln County Raceway will be Saturday night, May 8. The regional Mini-Sprint division will be on hand for their first of three visits, and they will run on the ¼ mile track. The regular four classes will be there as well. The gates open at 5 p.m., with racing starting at 7 p.m., CDT.
