Weather Cooperates with Dawson County Raceway By Darin Racek LEXINGTON, NE. (May 2) - In spite of a constant run of showers south of Lexington, no significant rain fell on Dawson County Raceway, aiding the track crew and drivers in having the show completed before 10 p.m. Sixty-three cars from the four state area came to Lexington and raced on the 3/8th mile track. David Murray, Jr. of Oberlin, Kan., Mike Nichols of Harlan, Iowa, Lonnie Greuter of Grand Island, and Colton Osborn of Cozad were constantly on the gas on their way to A Feature wins. With the aid of only one caution, it took Dave Murray three laps to go from tenth starting spot to the lead, and he moved out to nearly a half lap lead when the next caution period occurred on lap twelve. Four caution periods during the next two laps slowed the race to a crawl, but once the IMCA Modified drivers figured out which way to go, Murray was again off like a bandit en route to the win. Jeremy Frenier of Fort Morgan, Colo. started in eleventh place, but finished in second. Charley Brown of Maxwell started on the front row, spun on the second lap, restarted in nineteenth place, and rallied to finish the race in third. North Platte drivers Jay Steffens and Josh Sabin rounded out the top five. Murray, Cole Hodges of Ogallala, and Josh Leonard of Gibbon were the three heat race winners. In the Dawson County Raceway debut feature of the IMCA SportMods, heat winner Colton Osborn took off in his SportMod with the lead. Former Modified drivers Robby Leonard of Gibbon and heat winner Bryan Herrick of Curtis hung tight with each other for many laps, eventually racing for second place. With two laps to go, a caution came out that put the two right on the rear bumper of Osborn, but neither could deny him the first A Feature win in the class. Herrick was able to clear Leonard on the final restart to take the second spot. Shane Stout of North Platte finished in fourth place, while Brandon Leonard of Gibbon rounded out the top five. A dozen SportMods came to compete on their debut night. Osborn had hopes of not only a second A Feature win, this one in the IMCA Stock Cars, he was hoping to complete a perfect night. He won his heat and feature in the SportMod class. He won his heat race and the cash dash for the Stock Cars, and started on the front row. He was too aggressive on the start, and was forced to restart in the back, which killed his chances. It aided his brother Cale, who then started on the pole, along side heat winner Dan Walker of Eddyville. Cale went to the lead, but it didn’t take last year’s track champion Mike Nichols to track him down from the third row and show the way around the track. The last fourteen laps of the feature went unabated, and Nichols had control of every one of them. Cale Osborn finished in second place. Colton Osborn came back to third, only to be beaten at the finish line for the spot by Casey Woken of Ogallala. Jason Smidt of Minden finished in fifth place. Lonnie Greuter let it be known he would be a force to be reckoned with this year in the IMCA Hobby Stock A Feature. After starting in the third row, Greuter found his way by Anthony Martin of Wilcox and showed the field the way around the track. Corey Cruzan of Maxwell had the best view of him in second place, but never got close enough to contend. Austin Carter of Salina, Kan., currently going to school in Colby, had an impressive race, surviving a wreck with the two other Kansas drivers in the race (Dalton Dolan of Oberlin and Jeromy Wagner of Kensington) and driving by Jim Rayburn of Gibbon late for the third spot. Terry Greuter of Grand Island rounded out the top five. Lonnie Greuter, Rayburn, and Jim Buss of Blue Hill were the top drivers in the three heat races. After taking the next two weeks off for graduations, Dawson County Raceway will be back in action on Sunday, May 23, at 6:30 p.m. Joining the four regular classes that night will be the United Rebel Sprint Series, headquartered in Oberlin, Kansas. Grandstand tickets that night will be $12.00 for adults and $5.00 for children 6-12.
