McCOOK, NE. (May 14) - Although the races took less than two hours to complete, the fans at McCook Speedway were treated to a complete show. While David Murray, Jr. of Oberlin, Kan. and Bryan Herrick of Curtis three-peated feature victories, Casey Werkmeister of Maywood took his second win of the year and Richard Boon of Benkelman earned his first one. The caution-free, twenty lap IMCA Stock Car A Feature was nothing short of a tremendous battle for the entire field. Casey Werkmeister fought to the lead on lap six, only to be joined by Dave Plowman of Gretna. Plowman was driving a lower line when he caught Werkmeister, but the two raced side-by-side for what seemed to be half of the race. Casey would have the advantage at the scoring line most of the time, until Dave was able to sneak out front with six laps to go. He did not move up the track far enough to block the Maywood driver for another run, and he regained the lead one lap later. In the waning laps, Lloyd Meeske of Champion tracked the two down to make it a three car race to the finish. On the last lap, Werkmeister managed to get some breathing room after the three bunched up to earn a hard-fought win. Plowman finished in second, ahead of Meeske. Cale Osborn of Cozad finished in fourth place, while heat winner Bob Chalupa of McCook rounded out the top five. The other IMCA Stock Car heat race winner was Kyle Werkmeister of Maywood. IMCA Modified driver Chuck Stryker of Eddyville lost earlier in the week in a race for county commissioner in Dawson County, and looked as though he would take it out on the drivers he runs against regularly on a track in which he is more familiar. Stryker jumped to the lead on lap two and had a big lead on the field by the time heat winner David Murray found his way to second. Murray even thought he was out of reach, but after changing his line, caught the “Eddyville Flyer” and passed him for the lead with five laps to go in the caution-free event. Stryker settled for second place, followed by Jeremy Frenier of Fort Morgan, Colo., Zach Schultz of North Platte and Ronnie Wallace of McCook. Richard Boon has had some mechanical problems with his IMCA Hobby Stock of late at McCook Speedway and other tracks, so he had high hopes Friday night. After winning his heat race, he set the pace again early on in the feature, closely minded by Todd Pankonin of Benkelman. At the halfway point, the two made incidental contact going into corner one, which made Pankonin’s car get out of the groove, shoot up the track, and off of the turn. Damage to the car falling off of the track ended his night. After the restart, Boon was challenged by the Stute family of Benkelman, but when father Leland and son Litton began racing each other hard, that aided Boon in staying out front for victory. Litton beat Leland to the finish for second place. Cody DeWester of McCook came back from a flat tire to finish fourth, ahead of Dalton Dolan of Oberlin, Kan., and the rest of the field. Bryan Herrick not only won his third IMCA SportMod A Feature in a row, he completed the rare three race sweep of the night. After winning his heat race, he took the money in the lone cash dash of the night. He started the main even in the second row, took the lead by lap two, and paced the last ten laps for the win. On the last lap, Max Pollmann of Trenton made the move by Matt Matson of McCook for second place. After Matson’s carburetor failed to pass technical inspection, Chad Young of Imperial was credited with third place, Mitch Hamilton of McCook fourth, and Tim Cooper of North Platte fifth. Because of the April 30 rainout, the next race at McCook Speedway is scheduled for this coming Friday, May 21. The gates will open for fans and the drivers of these four classes at 6 p.m., and the races will start at 8 p.m., Central Time.
