NORTH PLATTE, NE (May 15) - Rain started hitting Lincoln County Raceway a little more than two hours before race time. However, in between drops, drivers and track crew were able to roll it in and had it ready to go about a half hour after normal start time. By the time the rain came back after 10 p.m., the races were about four laps short of being completed, so they were called completed by the officials. David Murray, Jr. of Oberlin, Kan., Cale Osborn of Cozad, and North Platte drivers Dan Morash and Shane Stout earned the A Feature victories of the night. R. C. Heil of North Platte paced the first two laps of the IMCA Modified A Feature until his car shot off of corner one, handing the lead to Jeremy Herbst. The track was still tacky for the last race of the night, and drivers were able to find places to run they don’t always find speed. David Murray used a very high line in corners three and four to track down the North Platte racer, and on lap nine, drove by him in that same spot. During a caution with four laps to go, the rain set back in, the track became slick, and the race was called. Jay Steffens of North Platte finished in second place. Cole Hodges of Ogallala took advantage of a three car race for third place that got the other drivers tangled up to get by them all and be in that position when the rain came. Ronnie Wallace of McCook and Jim Mlady of North Platte rounded out the top five. Murray, Wallace, and Charley Brown of Maxwell were the heat race winners. The IMCA Stock Car A Feature was a battle for the eighteen participants from the drop of the green to the finish. Kyle and Casey Werkmeister of Maywood duked it out for the lead until Casey was able to clear brother Kyle on lap four. The caution came out on lap five after Colton Osborn of Cozad checked up in corner three, collecting the nose piece of heat winner Mike Nichols of Harlan, Iowa. The racing was hard, but seemed to settle down until a caution on lap twelve bunched everyone back up, and the battling continued. Cale Osborn and Mike Nichols were battling hard for postion, with heat winner Charley Brown and cash dash winner Lloyd Meeske near by. The caution came out again after Meeske’s nosepiece was knocked off his car, which was the least of his car concerns as he nursed it for the pit. Cale Osborn was able to make a run on Casey Werkmeister on the last lap. Going into corner four, the two made contact. Osborn had the lead coming out of the corner and held Werkmeister off for the win. Colton Osborn finished in third place, getting by fifteen cars in fifteen laps. Charley Brown finished in fourth, while Kyle Werkmeister held onto fifth place. Travis Tilford of North Platte was the third Stock Car heat race winner. Despite going fifteen laps without a caution, the IMCA Hobby Stock A Feature became a wild affair. Heat winner Ron Edge of Amherst, Colo. was the leader from the start of the race, pursued by Dan Morash. Morash caught Edge on lap nine and tried to get underneath him as they completed lap ten after Edge came out of corner four too high. Edge overcorrected, sideswiped Morash, and both of them jumped the berm and headed for the infield. They both kept gassing the cars, jumped the berm in corner one back onto the track, and never lost a spot. Morash got by on the back straight and took the lead on lap eleven. Edge had a tire going flat. He retired with two laps to go. Corey Cruzan of Maxwell spoiled Morash’s opportunity to get his first win last week, but was unable to do it two weeks in a row. A very happy Morash was joined in the claim area by Cruzan, Rick Eller of North Platte, and Scott Gibson of North Platte for his first ever top four finish. Colt Gibbs of Holyoke, Colo. finished in fifth place. For the third straight week, The IMCA Northern SportMod division had a different A Feature winner. Opening night winner Bryan Herrick of Curtis made a big run at the lead at the start, only to have the car lock up in corner two, and requiring a tow back to the pits. Heat race winner Shane Stout beat Matt Caudillo of North Platte to corner one on the restart and became the man to beat. Shane led the entire fifteen lap feature en route to his first SportMod A Feature win. Gary Long of Valentine made his first run in the division, getting by Caudillo late in the event to finish a respectable second. Colton Osborn spun on lap five and spent the next ten laps catching back up to the field and passing enough cars to get into fourth place. Max Pollmann of Trenton finished in fifth place. After taking a week off, Lincoln County Raceway will return with a full night of racing on Saturday night, May 29, with the races beginning at 7 p.m., Central Time.
