NORTH PLATTE, NE (-May 29) - It was a good night for racing at Lincoln County Raceway, as coats were unneeded for most of the night, and the races were completed in under two-and-a-half hours. David Murray of Oberlin, Kan., Mike Nichols of Harlan, Iowa, Bryan Herrick of Curtis, and Dan Morash of North Platte completed their evenings with A Feature wins. The first twelve laps of the IMCA Modified A Feature went caution-free, and there was a good battle up front between heat winner David Murray and North Platte drivers Jeremy Herbst and Mike Saathoff. Herbst paced the early going, with Murray and Saathoff close at hand. On lap four, Saathoff made the power move and drove under both Murray and Herbst for the lead. Murray followed Mike, then made his own power move to the front a lap later. Herbst and Saathoff maintained a good battle for second place until Saathoff’s car broke on lap twelve, creating the only caution and ending his night. When the green flag resumed, Murray pulled out to what would be a straightaway lead on Herbst at the finish line. Heat winner Ronnie Wallace of McCook finished in third place, with Cole Hodges of Ogallala finishing in fourth, and cash dash winner Jim Mlady of North Platte coming home in fifth place. After the war the IMCA Stock Cars put on two weeks ago, May 29th’s A Feature went a little cleaner, and with fewer cautions. Lloyd Meeske of Champion started on the pole and showed the field the fast way around for eight laps. On lap nine, Mike Nichols, who started in row five, found his way through the field and his way around Meeske. A caution with five laps to go bunched up the battle for second place, as Nichols would go on for his first Lincoln County Raceway win of the year. Casey Werkmeister of Maywood worked his way to the second spot, ahead of Brandon Clough of Wallace. Meeske finished in fourth place, while Colton Osborn of Cozad rounded out the top five. Nichols, Clough, and Osborn were the IMCA Stock Car heat race winners. After breaking two weeks earlier, Bryan Herrick’s IMCA SportMod held together for this night’s races. After winning the heat race, Herrick started on the front row and jumped out to the lead. Shane Stout of North Platte, the previous feature winner, worked his way into second place until mechanical issues put him out of the event. Colton Osborn inherited the position, but could not deny Herrick his second track win of the year. Matt Caudillo of North Platte kept his car out of trouble and finished in the show position. Tim Cooper of North Platte earned fourth place. Brian Piel of North Platte, in his first night out, finished in fifth place. During intermission, heat winner Dan Morash admitted to the crowd he was having engine problems with his IMCA Hobby Stock and didn’t know how long he would last in the twelve lap main event. The car looked pretty sick early on, as he took the lead from Holyoke, Colorado’s Colt Gibbs on lap 2 and had a big lead on Corey Cruzan of Maxwell when the caution came out with three laps to go after Pete Gomez of Marsland lost a wheel. After the race resumed, Cruzan put up a fierce challenge for the lead, but the engine in Morash’s car held together long enough to help the North Platte driver to limp home with his second consecutive feature win. Gibbs finished with a third place, his best of the year. Rick Eller of North Platte finished in fourth, and Andrew Baumgardner of North Platte finished in fifth place in his first ever start. The next event at Lincoln County Raceway will be the annual “Run for The Money” on Tuesday night, June 8. Extra money will be added to the purse of all four divisions, and the lineups will be determined by the draw. The gates will open at 5 p.m., and the races will start at 7 p.m., Central Time. Grandstand admission will be $12.00 for adults, $6.00 for children 6-12, and free for children 5 and under.
