McCOOK, NE (May 7) - Despite the cold temperatures, the racing kept hot at McCook Speedway on May 7, aided by a visit from the regional Mini-Sprint class. The 600cc cars were able to encircle the track at McCook Speedway about 1.5 seconds faster than the IMCA Modifieds. At the end of the night, David Murray, Jr. of Oberlin, Kan., Larry Pollmann of McCook, Todd Pankonin of Benkelman, Bryan Herrick of Curtis, and Cory Kelley of North Platte were the hot dogs, as they were the A Feature winners. David Murray claims he is adapting to his IMCA Modified Victory Chassis rather than he adapting it to him. The heat winner started in the fifth row of the twenty lap A Feature. The front of the field was paced by heat winner Don Hagan, Jr. of McCook and rookie Zach Schultz of North Platte. Schultz and Hagan were putting on a battle up front when Hagan hooked the big tire in corner one, causing him to spin. On the restart, Murray became a player and had to give it some effort in getting by Schultz four laps later. After that, the Kansas driver drove away for the win. Jeremy Frenier of Fort Morgan, Colo. finished in second place, getting by Schultz as well. Cole Hodges of Ogallala and Brandon Hagan of McCook rounded out the top five. Chuck Stryker of Eddyville was the third IMCA Modified heat race winner. Despite being involved in two accidents, not of his doing, Larry Pollmann was able to deal with the adversity in the IMCA Stock Car A Feature to win his first A Feature at McCook Speedway in that class. Early in the race, Pollmann, who was on the pole, slipped up the track, allowing Bob Chalupa of McCook to take the lead. Chalupa enjoyed the lead while Pollmann was first battle cash dash winner Cale Osborn of Cozad and then Casey Woken of Ogallala (both were the winners of heat races). When the race got in a good groove, primarily the last eleven caution-free laps, Pollmann hung with Chalupa and waited for an opportunity to get back by. With five laps to go, it came. Chalupa slipped up in corner one, allowing Pollmann to get by and earning the win. Cale Osborn came from the back and used the high and low lines to move back into second place at the finish. Dave Plowman of Gretna eked by Chalupa at the scoring line for third place. Norton, Kan. driver Jason Davis finished in fifth place. The IMCA Hobby Stocks made quick work of their A Feature, completing all twelve laps without stoppage. Heat winner Todd Pankonin made quick work of the field, taking the lead at the start and leading the entire race. Leland Stute, also of Benkelman, closed in on him, but probably needed another three laps to show Todd he was there. Cody Williams of Park, Kan. did not finish the heat race, yet came back for third place in the money race. Cody DeWester of McCook and Litton Stute of Benkelman rounded out the top five finishers. The lead of the IMCA SportMod A Feature went back and forth between Shane Stout of North Platte and Bryan Herrick. Stout took the lead at the start, only to have Herrick find a groove to get by him. Four laps later, Herrick caught up to lapped traffic, and Stout used the car as a pick to regain the lead. A caution with two laps to go ended up being his worst enemy, as Herrick was able to get by with one lap to go and hold on for his second straight feature win. Colton Osborn of Cozad was in third place on the last lap, but spun in corner four in front of Mitch Hamilton of McCook. That allowed Lexington driver Craig Howard to pass both cars and finish in third place. Hamilton came around in fourth, Osborn fifth. Fifteen Mini-Sprints from Nebraska, Colorado, and Wyoming came together for a nice gathering of cars. The Wyoming driver, Scotty Soder of Cheyenne, probably wished he stayed home after rolling his car over on the third lap of the A Feature. He exited the car on his own power. Cory Kelley drove the third car for the Farley family out of Brighton, Colo., and they probably wished they let him drive another car. Kelly dominated his talent-heavy heat race, drew the pole for the A, then led every lap on the way to the win. Andy Farley finished in second place. Shane Sundquist of Loomis made his appearance a good one, as he came home in third place, ahead of Auston Pribbenow of Elizabeth, Colo., and his sister, Mandee Sundquist. The next night of racing for the four regular class of McCook Speedway will be next Friday night, May 14. The gates will open at 6 p.m., and the races will start at 8 p.m., Central Time.
