Farley Flies at McCook Speedway By Darin Racek MC COOK, NE. (July 9) - McCook Speedway was back in action on July 9, and the Colorado Sidewinder Association came to put on a show with the regular five classes. After taking some extra time to water and pack the track, the drivers were able to race all over the action-sized 3/8-mile track. Andy Farley of Brighton, Colorado, David Murray, Jr. of Oberlin, Kansas, Casey Werkmeister of Maywood, Todd Pankonin of Benkelman, and Shane Stout of North Platte took their times in getting to the front of their main events, but were the winners. After losing a wheel and tipping over off of corner three in his heat race, local driver Arden Myers jumped out into the lead of the CSA Mini-Sprint A Feature. Heat winner Auston Pribbenow of Elizabeth, Colorado, wasted very little time coming from the fifth row to challenge Myers for the lead. The McCook driver appeared to have the race in his control until he caught the slower traffic. This also aided Andy Farley, the other heat winner, to gain on the top two. With two laps to go, Farley made the two-for-one deal, getting by both Pribbenow and Myers as they worked the slower traffic. He would put another lapped car between himself and runner-up Pribbenow before the end of the race. Myers finished in third place, two lapped cars ahead of Josh Lipker of Cozad and Nick Rigali of Aurora, Colorado. Eighteen IMCA Modifieds started their A Feature, paced in the early stages by Don Hagan, Jr. of McCook. Jay Steffens of North Platte, a heat race winner, made the pass for the lead, but it was nullified by a caution on lap four. The two would stay out front until a caution on lap six aligned heat winner David Murray on the rear bumper of Steffens. Completing the first lap after the restart, Murray passed both cars in corner two for the lead. Four more cautions would slow the race, and as Murray had taken the white flag when the final caution flew, the race was called and scored as the drivers finished lap nineteen, with the person deemed the cause put to the back of the lead lap. By that time, cash dash winner Zach Schultz of North Platte was safely in second place. Brandon Hagan of McCook finished in third place. Charles Stryker of Eddyville and Nick Tubbs of Colby, Kansas rounded out the top five. The winner of the other IMCA Modified heat race was Dave Pedersen of Brady. The IMCA Stock Car Feature ended up being a battle of Caseys. Casey Woken of Ogallala took the lead from Kyle Werkmeister of Maywood on lap eight and appeared to be on his way of taking his first feature win at McCook Speedway. However, Casey Werkmeister, the previous feature winner, worked his way from the tenth spot and passed brother Kyle in time to take a shot at the win. With two laps to go, the heat winner got by Woken to deny him the win and worked out his second win in a row. Lloyd Meeske of Champion also got by Kyle Werkmeister, dropping him to fourth at the finish. Jason Davis of Norton, Kansas finished in fifth place. Cale Osborn of Cozad was the other heat race winner. Leland Stute of Benkelman paced the first half of the IMCA Hobby Stock A Feature, but would pace no more after his car lost power, sending him to the pits. Todd Pankonin inherited the lead, tailed by heat winner Litton Stute, Leland’s son. Litton could not avenge the lead loss of his father, as Pankonin would hold on for the victory. Cody DeWester of McCook tried to sneak into the mix late, but third was all he could muster. Allen Wissmann of Bertrand and Ray Caldwell of McCook rounded out the top five. After winning his IMCA SportMod heat race, Mitch Hamilton of McCook looked to double his pleasure by winning the A Feature as well. He jetted out into the lead, followed by Bryan Herrick of Curtis and Shane Stout. On lap three, Hamilton spun, taking the left door of Herrick with him as he spun around. Stout inherited the lead and would not let anyone get close enough to challenge for the win. Herrick did come back for second place. Chad Young of Imperial stayed out of trouble and finished in third place. Hamilton and Matt Matson of McCook rounded out the top five. McCook Speedway will take next Friday off and be back in action on Friday night, July 23. The gates open at 6 p.m., and the races start at 8 p.m.
