Murray, Nichols, Davis, and Herrick “Won” for The Money By Darin Racek NORTH PLATTE, NE (July 13) - The annual “Run for The Money” was finally ran, with the rains of June replaced by 100 degree weather at race time. Cars from four states pulled into the pits of Lincoln County Raceway in search of fun and wins. While many of the drivers had fun, David Murray, Jr. of Oberlin, Kansas, Mike Nichols of Harlan, Iowa, Austin Davis of Benkelman, and Bryan Herrick of Curtis won most of the money. After two short caution periods in the first four laps of the IMCA Modified A Feature, the remaining twenty-one laps went caution-free. Heat race winner David Murray drew the pole for the race, and pulled out for the early lead. When the race went for the long green, he pulled out to a huge lead, having lapped eight of the twenty cars that started the event Lapped traffic may have affected him some, but at times, it affected the good battle for second place between heat race and cash dash winner Dylan Smith of Osceola, Ronnie Wallace, and Jason Schoenberger of Russell, Kansas. At the finish line, Murray had over a straightaway on his nearest competitor, who ended up being Smith. Wallace stayed in front of Schoenberger for third place. Heat winner John Hansen of Brush, Colorado rounded out the top five. The twenty IMCA Stock Cars that started their twenty-five lap event put on a hard-fought battle. After getting into corner one in bad shape on lap two, leader Colton Osborn of Cozad drifted up the track, which allowed Casey Woken of Ogallala to drive on by for the lead. Mike Nichols started in the third row and quickly worked his way up to Woken. On the sixth lap, while cars were tangling behind them, Nichols snuck by Woken to take the lead. Nichols and Woken would dominate the top two spots, with Nichols taking his fourth win in a row. There was a considerable amount of passing behind them. Heat winners Brandon Clough of Wallace and Casey Werkmeister of Maywood started in rows five and six and finished in third and fourth. Charley Brown of Maxwell passed the most cars, going from eighteenth at the start of the race t finish in fifth place. The other Stock Car heat was won by Cale Osborn of Cozad. Austin Davis was back in his old car Tuesday night, but earned the same result as Saturday night in the IMCA Hobby Stock main event. While watching Corey Cruzan of Maxwell and Davis’s fellow heat race winner Dan Morash of North Platte swap the lead several times, Davis closed in on the lead. After a lap seven caution, Davis set his sights on then leader Morash, and made the winning pass in the next two laps. Morash held onto second place. Mike Woodhead of Holyoke, Colorado finished in third place. Dalton Dolan of Oberlin, Kansas brought his car that he had to rebuild recently after accidents to the fourth place. Cruzan, who was involved in the lap seven accident, came back for a fifth place finish. Bryan Herrick’s IMCA SportMod broke down during hot laps and had to have his car pushed to the pits. Fortunately, it was the result of a loose nut, and after things were tightened up, Herrick’s car was hard to beat. Herrick pulled away from the field in the heat race. In the feature, he was hounded by Colton Osborn, who closed in late, but a bounce off the berm gave Herrick the breathing room to earn the win. Shane Stout of North Platte came from the back to finish in third place. Rick Putnam of Gothenburg and Tim Cooper of North Platte rounded out the top five. The next regular race for Lincoln County Raceway will be Saturday night, July 31. The Lincoln County Ag Society will run the 12th Annual Sandhills Shootout for the IMCA Modifieds and IMCA Stock Cars on Monday and Tuesday, July 19-20. The gates will open each night at 5 p.m., and the races will start at 7 p.m.
