Murray, Plowman, Houfek, and Stout Take Fair Race Wins at McCook Speedway By Darin Racek McCOOK, NE. (July 29) - The Red Willow County fair races had “something for everyone”, except for cat lovers. Between the four classes, a dozen cars that had not raced at McCook Speedway this year were in the pits to race for the extra money. While Hans Houfek of Emerson was one of the invaders in victory lane, regulars David Murray, Jr. of Oberlin, Kansas, Dave Plowman of Gretna, and Shane Stout of North Platte were able to defend their turf. When the IMCA Modified A Feature started, it appeared that there would be a good battle between heat winner David Murray and Brandon Hagan of McCook. Hagan had the lead on the opening lap, but had Murray shoot under him to take the lead on lap three. Hagan used the high line to stay with Murray, and nearly took it back when the caution fell for the third time. The two would continue a bit more until cautions took their toll on everyone, as there were four cautions on laps five and six from everything to a cat that almost made it across the track to Don Geist of Loveland, Colorado getting on his lid for the first time of his racing career after he ran over a tractor tire avoiding the disabled car of Don Hagan, Jr. of McCook. Geist fared much better than the cat. When the race finally found some rhythm, Murray found his and drove away for the win. Jay Schilling of McCook battled Brandon Hagan for the second spot, but could not shake him from it. Jeremy Frenier of Fort Morgan, Colorado bettered his finishing spot four better than his starting spot, going from eighth to fourth. Heat winner Nick Tubbs of Colby, Kansas finished in fifth. After debris forced a complete restart, the IMCA Stock Car A Feature went nineteen laps caution-free. It was a twenty-five lap race, and the ending got a little wild. Cale Osborn of Cozad, who became a father Thursday morning, drew the pole and used it to jump to the lead. While he was out front, Casey Werkmeister of Maywood worked his way forward from the fourth row and Dave Plowman was doing the same from row five. Werkmeister caught Osborn before lap ten and the two battled on the bottom of the track. Plowman was alone up high, and was able to drive forward to join in on the fun for the lead. On lap seventeen, he was able to get by Osborn for the lead. Werkmeister was able to follow suit after the lap nineteen restart. After the leaders took the white flag, a car spun. It was decided to have a one lap shootout, which never seems to work well with racers or scorekeepers. Sure enough, Werkmeister and Plowman came out of corner four side-by-side, and the two made contact before the finish line. At the line, Plowman’s went into the guardrail, and then he, Cale Osborn, and Randy Tipton of Weskan, Kansas all spun. Officials decided to call the race, go back to the running order on lap twenty-four, and put Werkmeister to the end of the lead lap cars. Plowman was determined the winner, with Osborn and Tipton second and third. Brandon Clough of Wallace and Casey Woken of Ogallala rounded out the top five. Cozad brothers Colton and Cale Osborn, as well as Plowman, won the Stock Car heat races. The IMCA Hobby Stock A Feature went without a caution in that fifteen lap affair. Hans Houfek, son-in-law to Leland Stute and brother-in-law to cash dash winner Litton Stute of Benkelman, drew the outside front row position and passed Anthony Martin of Wilcox for the lead on lap two. While Houfek enjoyed the lead, good racing was going on behind him. At one point, Litton Stute, Austin Davis of Benkelman, and Corey Cruzan of Maxwell were three wide for third place. Davis managed to get away from both to run and finish in third place, behind second place Martin and winner Houfek. A spin on the last lap made it confusing for fifth on back, and they were scored as they completed lap fourteen, with the cause of the accident put to the back of the lead lap. Jim Buss of Blue Hill was credited with fourth place. Todd Pankonin of Benkelman, the other IMCA Hobby Stock heat winner, rounded out the top five. Cody DeWester of McCook barrel-rolled on the opening lap of his heat race after an axle broke, which pretty much totaled his car. He got out of the car on his own power, but opted to get some tests done after going to the pits. The results of those tests were not known as of press time. The fifteen lap IMCA SportMod A main was shortened to ten laps after multiple cautions and the number of cars on the track decreasing. Shane Stout paced the first completed lap, ahead of Colton Osborn and Bryan Herrick. Heat-winning Osborn followed Stout for most of the race, and after the field took the white flag, got too low in the corner, getting into Stout and spinning him out, which also forced all of the other remaining cars to spin or stop. The race was called, and Stout was declared the winner. Osborn was moved to fifth place for the finish, which moved Herrick to second place, Matt Matson of McCook to third, and Britt Geist of Loveland into fourth place, giving her a much better night than her father Don, mentioned in the Modified paragraph, and the cat, of course. Dennis McFarland and track prep crew will be scrambling next week to get the track ready after the fair moves off the premises in preparation of the August 6 show. The gates will open at 6 p.m., and the races start at 8 p.m. McCook Speedway is in the Central Time Zone.
