Cruzan Wins on Cruzan Motorsports Night
By Darin Racek
NORTH PLATTE, NE (July 31) - The Cruzan family came from as far away as
Colorado Springs, Colorado and Marshalltown, Iowa, as they sponsored the
nights races. They supplied bicycles and backpacks as giveaways for the
kids, as well as handed out school supplies after the candy toss to all of
the school-aged kids. David Murray, Jr. of Oberlin, Kansas, Cale Osborn of
Cozad, Bryan Herrick of Curtis, and yes, Corey Cruzan of Maxwell chalked up
A Feature wins during the evening.
The IMCA Hobby Stock A Feature went all fifteen laps without a yellow, and
the race came down to the wire. Cash dash winner Ron Edge of Holyoke,
Colorado passed Rick Eller of North Platte for the lead on lap three and
tried to pull away from the pack. Heat winner Dan Morash of North Platte,
who passed Corey Cruzan early in the race, caught Edge first. Cruzan fell
back early searching for a line to run, but after he settled in, tracked
down the leaders on the waning laps. After getting under Morash, Cruzan
managed to pass Edge with only one lap to go. Edge barely edged out Morash
at the finish line for second place, as Cruzan cruised to his third track
win of the year and his tenth career IMCA Hobby Stock win. Rick Eller and
Henry Henderson of Sutherland finished in fourth and fifth spots.
The IMCA Modified main event also went caution-free. Mike Saathoff of North
Platte jumped to the lead, followed by Ogallala driver Cole Hodges. The two
moved out to a nice sized lead on the field in the first five laps. Heat
winner David Murray moved to third place and began to track down the front
runners, gaining much ground after they ran onto slower traffic. Not
dispensing with it fast enough, Murray caught, then got by Hodges and
Saathoff by lap twelve. He went on for his tenth win of the year, at North
Platte alone. Saathoff followed Murray the remaining eight laps, remaining
respectably close en route to his second place finish. Hodges remained in
third place, with Charley Brown of Maxwell finishing in fourth and Jim Mlady
of North Platte taking fifth place. Jay Steffens of North Platte and Murray
were the two Modified heat race winners.
Cale Osborn became a father on Thursday morning and was really focused on
winning the IMCA Stock Car A Feature on Saturday night. Osborn started on
the second row, but took the lead from North Platte driver Kent Lower after
a restart. Lower’s car was handling well, and kept up with Osborn. Things
got a little close for comfort when Lower got a better run into the corner
than he thought and ran into the back of Osborn’s car, causing damage on his
own car and forcing him to call it a night. Heat winner Osborn’s car was
pretty much unscathed, and he maintained a lead over new uncle Colton Osborn
of Cozad. A caution with three laps to go bunched the field together, but
Papa Cale was able to keep in front of Uncle Colton and the rest of the
field to take the win. Point leader Mike Nichols of Harlan, Iowa finished in
third, one spot ahead of second in points Casey Werkmeister of Maywood.
Travis Tilford of North Platte started back in row six, but finished in the
fifth spot. Charley Brown was the winner of the other Stock Car heat race.
Shane Stout of North Platte came to Lincoln County Raceway with hopes of
winning his third IMCA SportMod A Feature in three nights, winning Thursday
in McCook and Friday at Holyoke, Colorado. After winning his heat, Stout
moved into the lead after passing Valentine’s Gary Long. Heat race winner
Bryan Herrick had a daughter get married today, and he was in a hurry to get
the race over. With about six laps to go, Herrick was able to find a way
around Stout, keep him behind him to deny the three-night sweep, garner the
win, and still make it to the reception. Colton Osborn finished in third
place. Jacob Adler of Holyoke, Colorado finished in third place. The final
three cars tangled in corner four on the last lap, but Chad Young of
Imperial was the first car to get turned around and finish in fifth place.
The next night of racing at Lincoln Raceway will be on Saturday night,
August 7, at 7 p.m., Central Time. It will be the final Burger King 9 For 9
night for the IMCA Modifieds.
