Colton Osborn Has Good Night at Dawson County Raceway By Darin Racek LEXINGTON, NE (August 8) - It was a hot, sticky evening at Dawson County Raceway on August 8, but the fans hung around to watch some good racing on Fan Appreciation night. It was also a tribute night to Jeremy Trompke, a friend and pit man for many of the drivers from the Kearney and Gibbon area who passed away on July 29, and his family was on hand to award the trophies for the night’s A Feature winners. David Murray, Jr. of Oberlin, Kansas, Colton Osborn of Cozad, Casey Werkmeister of Maywood, and Lonnie Greuter of Grand Island were the recipients of those trophes. The IMCA Modified A Feature went the first seventeen laps of their twenty lap feature without a caution. Heat winner Bo Egge of Kearney charged out to a big lead on the field when the green flag waved. David Murray started on row four, and did some charging of his own to catch, then pass Egge on lap seven. As Murray extended his lead, Egge put on a good fight for the second spot with Jay Steffens of North Platte. The two exchanged the spot a few times before, and even after the yellow. Although it kept them from denying Murray his ninth win in ten races at the track, they did put on a good show for the fans, with Steffens having the spot at the end. Heat race winner Jeremy Frenier of Fort Morgan, Colorado finished in fourth place, while Steve Aitken of Cozad came from the seventh row to finish in fifth place. Vince Leibert of Lexington took the lead at the beginning of the IMCA SportMod main event, trying to keep ahead of a good battle behind him between Bryan Herrick of Curtis and Shane Stout of North Platte. The two made slight contact on lap five, with Stout going for the spin and put to the back after the ensuing yellow. After the restart, heat race and cash dash winner Colton Osborn became a player in the top spot, and with five laps to go, made the pass for the lead. One more caution came out, and during it, it was noticeable that the left front tire on Osborn’s car was at an angle, caused by damage to either a ball joint or an A-arm. Everything else holding the wheel up and on held for the remaining laps, and Osborn made the clean sweep in the SportMod division. Leibert was able to be ahead of Herrick at the finish line. Robby Leonard of Gibbon finished in fourth place. Stout came back for a fifth place finish. Colton Osborn also won his heat race in the IMCA Stock Car class, and really had his hopes on winning five races for the night when he ran the Stock Car A Feature. However, Casey Werkmeister, the other heat winner, passed his brother Kyle for the lead on lap two and had a comfortable lead until a lap six caution bunched up the field. When the race restarted, Casey had both Colton and Cale Osborn lined up behind him. Colton put up a good fight, and nearly took the lead from Werkmeister on more than one occasion. Werkmeister finally found a way to pull away when another caution came out after third place Mike Nichols of Harlan, Iowa lost the nosepiece on his car, which earned him a trip to the back of the pack. Werkmeister again had the Osborns on his back bumper, but was able to hold them off for the win. Colton actually had to battle Cale in the last two laps to finish in second place. Nichols moved back into the fourth spot on the last lap. Brandon Clough of Wallace, who was also involved in an early caution, came from the back to finish in fifth place. Fourteen cars started the IMCA Hobby Stock A Feature, and although there was only one caution, only nine cars finished. Dillon Thompson of Campbell had mechanical issues after winning his heat race, but his car was fast in the feature, and took the lead on lap three from Kevin Hagan of Eddyville. Lonnie Greuter had a slower march through the field, but did manage to catch Thompson. The two put on a good battle, but Greuter finally zigged when Thompson zagged to get out front with three laps to go and never relinquished the top spot after that. Jim Rayburn of Gibbon finished in the third spot. Anthony Martin finished in fourth place. Heat and cash dash winner Jim Buss of Blue Hill finished in fifth place. The next night of racing for Dawson County Raceway will be Sunday, August 15. On that night, the United Rebel Sprint Series will make their third and final appearance of the season on the fast 3/8-mile track. The gates open at 5 p.m., and the races will start at 6:30 p.m.
