Terry Eatherton Gets First (And Maybe Last) Hobby Stock Feature Win By Darin Racek NORTH PLATTE, NE (August 14) - Racing at Lincoln County Raceway was special on the penultimate event of the season August 14. The racing was decent, and the kids were treated to a candy toss, as well as bicycles and gift cards that came from Alco. Tate Anderson, Ayden Steffens, Justis Brown, and Kamryn Hughes were the boys and girls that took home bicycles. Terry Eatherton of Gibbon, David Murray, Jr. of Oberlin, Kansas, and Cale and Colton Osborn of Cozad were the drivers that took home the A Feature wins. Eleven cars started the IMCA Hobby Stock A Feature that went the first twelve laps without a yellow. The yellow and orange car of Terry Eatherton took the lead at the start of the feature and was into lapped traffic by the halfway point. Heat winner Loren Jessen of Grant also maneuvered through the lapped traffic and caught Eatherton when the caution came out with three laps to go. On the restart, Eatherton, a former promoter of Lincoln County Raceway in 2001-2002 who was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2008 and decided to start racing in 2009 after a ten-plus year hiatus, picked up where he left off, not missing a mark and making his way to a special A Feature win, his first ever in an IMCA Hobby Stock. After the race, he announced that he may retire after the feature win, which he believes his previous one came sometime in the 1980’s. Loren Jessen stayed not to far behind to tie his best ever second place finish. Corey Cruzan of Maxwell snuck by Ron Edge of Holyoke, Colorado for third place at the finish, finishing two spots ahead of heat winner Dan Morash of North Platte and unofficially tying him for the point lead with one race to go. David Murray returned to his winning ways in the IMCA Modified A Feature, but he about ran out of time. Fort Morgan, Colorado driver Jeremy Frenier was a deer out front, scurrying to the lead. North Platte racers Josh Sabin and Dan Carl were putting on a good battle behind him when they were joined by Ronnie Wallace of McCook and Murray. Wallace first got by Carl, but when he struggled to get by heat winner Sabin, Murray snuck underneath Wallace first, then Sabin. Cautions kept Frenier from dashing away, and Murray put him in his sights, taking the lead with three laps to go. Frenier did hold onto second place. Dan Carl was able to remain in the top four, and Cole Hodges of Ogallala finished in fifth. Charley Brown of Maxwell was the other Modified heat race winner. Fourteen IMCA Stock Cars took the call for their A Feature, and despite an opening lap incident that involved several cars, all fourteen cars finished, and on the lead lap. Brandon Clough of Wallace followed brother Kyle’s lead from last week and took the lead of the event on the first lap. He was hounded by Cale Osborn, who stayed with him, then made his move when Clough moved high in a corner. Osborn took the lead on lap five and would never be fronted. Clough kind of did follow his brother’s lead, as he finished in second place, similar to Kyle the week before. Colton Osborn had to contend with Charley Brown of third place, and was able to keep the position. Point leader Mike Nichols of Harlan, Iowa finished in fifth place, which did not help his national champion hopes any, but did help him earn three more points than heat winner Casey Werkmeister of Maywood, which should give him a six point lead going into next week. Aforementioned Kyle Clough won the other IMCA Stock Car heat race. Colton Osborn extended his point lead in the IMCA SportMod class with his A Feature win. Second place in points Bryan Herrick of Curtis spun early in the race, and stopped his car in the infield. The yellow did not come out, as the heat winner was out of harm’s way. When Herrick rejoined the race, he was two laps down, which prevented him from getting a top five finish. Shane Stout of North Platte had a flat tire while running in second place, but benefited from a spin by Tim Cooper of North Platte that brought out a yellow and allowed Stout’s crew to change a tire without losing a lap. He restated in the back of the field, and finished in second place. Matt Caudillo of North Platte lost a spring in the feature, but was also to make repairs during a yellow and finished in third place. Chad Young of Imperial stayed out of trouble for a fourth place finish, and Kyle Vohland of Gibbon finished in fifth place. Lincoln County Raceway will conclude the racing season next Saturday night, August 21. The gates open at 5 p.m., and the races will start at 7 p.m. The championship race for the Burger King 9 For 9 Challenge Series for the IMCA Modifieds will be held as well, after the night’s regular A Features.
