Herbert Holds Trophy at Dawson County Raceway By Darin Racek LEXINGTON, NE (August 15) - The temperature felt about twenty degrees cooler than the previous week at Dawson County Raceway, but the racing excitement bubbled over the boiling point Sunday night. The United Rebel Sprint Series again help heat up the show for their third and final visit of the year. Brian Herbert of Dodge City, Kansas, David Murray of Oberlin, Kansas, Mike Nichols of Harlan, Iowa, Allen Halte of Grand Island, and Colton Osborn of Cozad were hot, as they steamed their ways to the A Feature wins. Fifteen United Rebel Sprint Series racecars lined up for their twenty-five lap A Feature. Kaden Taylor of Forgan, Oklahoma jumped out to the lead of the start of the event. Heat winner Smokey Fairbank of Ransom, Kansas moved into second place and was reeling in Taylor when Liberal, Kansas driver Ty Williams caught him. The first of three cautions occurred after the completion of lap eight, and the second after lap nine. When racing resumed, Fairbank continued the pressure on the Oklahoma driver. On lap eleven, he took the lead, only to lose it to Williams on the next lap. Williams moved out to a big lead, but back in the field, Brian Herbert worked through the field and began to gain ground. He caught his fellow heat winner around lap nineteen, and the battle was on. Herbert nearly took the lead, but a lapped car prevented him from leading. After he regrouped, he caught back up to Williams, who had moved down the track into his line. He didn’t move down far enough, and with two laps to go, Herbert made the winning pass. Williams tangled with a lapped car after taking the white flag, but managed to hold onto second place after the caution period that occurred. Fairbank finished in third place. Taylor earned himself a respectable fourth place finish, made even more respectable when you lean he is unable to use his legs and controls the car entirely with his hands. Jetmore, Kansas racer Ray Seamann rounded out the top five. David Murray earned his third win in as many nights and four wins out of five nights in the IMCA Modified class. After winning Wednesday in Stockton, Kansas, Friday at WaKeeney, Kansas, and North Platte Saturday night, Murray had to start back in the seventh row after being involved in a heat race incident. Murray got by Josh Sabin of North Platte for the lead on lap seven and never looked back. The racing behind him was pretty good, especially the battle Jeremy Frenier of Fort Morgan, Colorado and Cole Hodges of Ogallala, which ended up being the battle for second place. Frenier finished second to Murray Friday and Saturday night, and came inches short of doing it again, as Hodges was determined by the scorekeepers as crossing the finish line first. Josh Leonard of Gibbon, driving the car normally run by Bo Egge, finished in fourth place, ahead of Steve Aitken of Cozad and the rest of the field. Aitken and Charles Stryker of Eddyville won the two heat races. Many people in the crowd agreed the first IMCA Stock Car heat race of the night was one of the best races ever, as less than four car lengths was the distance between winner Kyle Clough of Wallace and fourth place Casey Werkmeister of Maywood. Colton Osborn won a little more subdued second heat race, then took the lead in the A Feature on lap three. A strange caution on lap five had Clough move to the field for jumping the start, and top five drivers Werkmeister and Kerry Jones of North Platte heading to the pits for repairs. Cale Osborn of Cozad moved to second on the restart, and took the lead from brother Colton on lap six. Mike Nichols moved up three spots on the restart, and he followed Cale to the front. Five laps later, he took the lead, the last one of the night. Cale Osborn did finish in second place, in spite of dropping back to fourth after he and Casey Woken of Ogallala made contact and lost spots. Casey Werkmeister came from the back and snuck into third place at the finish. Colton was third on the last lap, but lost spots to Werkmeister and Woken and finished in fifth place. Colton faired much better in his IMCA SportMod. Osborn took the lead from Lexington driver Vince Leibert on lap four. Leibert remained close, and took the lead back on lap seven. Osborn passed again for the lead a lap later, before the caution came out after Shane Stout spun. Stout, of North Platte, was determined not the cause for the yellow and given his spot back. He moved into second place to give Osborn a run for the money, but didn’t close in enough to deny Osborn the win. Stout was followed by fellow heat race winner Leibert. Kyle Prauner of Norfolk was unable to help his national point cause by finishing in fourth place. Brandon Leonard of Gibbon finished in fifth place. Terry Eatherton of Gibbon won the IMCA Hobby Stock A Feature Saturday night in North Platte, and when he took the lead on the opening lap, people wondered if he could do it two nights in a row. Anthony Martin of Wilcox had other thoughts, and he took the lead on lap two. Eatherton stayed with him, and was joined by Allen Halte. The three put on a good show, but it looked like Martin would be able to hold them off for the win. Looks aren’t everything, and on lap thirteen, Martin went too high into corner three and fell off of the track. He came back on and finished in fifth. Halte inherited the lead and kept ahead for the win. Dillon Thompson of Campbell went to the high line and got by Eatherton for second place. Heat winner Ben Hobbs of Red Cloud finished in fourth place. Martin was able to drive back up to fifth place. The other IMCA Hobby Stock heat race was won by Kevin Hagan of Eddyville. One more night of racing remains at Dawson County Raceway in Lexington, and that will be next Sunday, August 22. The gates will open at 5 p.m., and the races will start at 6:30 p.m. The regular four classes will be on hand to figure out who will finish where in the final points standings.
