NORTH PLATTE, NE (August 21) - It was the final night of racing for the 2010 season at Lincoln County Raceway on August 21, and while some drivers were looking for wins, others were envisioning making championship hopes into reality. At the same time, they all put on a fantastic show for the fans in attendance. Cole Hodges of Ogallala, Mike Nichols of Harlan, Iowa, Terry Eatherton of Gibbon, and Bryan Herrick of Curtis were the drivers able to obtain feature wins. David Murray, Jr. of Oberlin, Kansas, Nichols, Corey Cruzan of Maxwell, and Colton Osborn of Cozad were really the track champions of each class. The championship race for the Burger King Nine for Nine Series was held as well for the IMCA Modified class. Cole Hodges drew the pole for the event and led the first lap. Murray started in the second row, but took the lead on lap two and never looked back. Hodges remained in second place. Jeremy Herbst of North Platte, driving Randy Boettger’s car, improved three spots from his start to finish in third place. Charles Stryker of Eddyville finished in fourth place, ahead of Jeremy Frenier of Fort Morgan, Colorado, and North Platte racers Josh Sabin and Zach Schultz. Jay Steffens of North Platte also qualified, but was unable to make the start. In the earlier A Feature event, Josh Sabin lost the lead to Cole Hodges on lap five, before the second period of the twenty lap race. On the next three laps, Hodges put a big lead on the field. On the ninth lap, Josh Leonard of Gibbon, who was running in third place at the time, spun, and collected Sabin, Schultz, Herbst, and McCook driver Ronnie Wallace. Sabin was towed away, while the others rejoined the field. Second place Jay Steffens tried to stay there after the restart, but couldn’t keep David Murray behind him. By the time Murray got by, Hodges again amassed a large lead. Near the end of the race, a slow car helped Murray close the gap, and on the last lap, he made a furious run, but he could not deny Hodges his first win of the year. Jeremy Frenier finished in third place. David Murray had the points championship locked up last week. Steffens’s car broke coming to take the checkered flag, and as it coasted to the finish, he was passed by Zach Schultz for fourth place. Murray, as well as Jim Mlady and Mike Saathoff of North Platte, were the three heat race winners. Ronnie Wallace also drove Brent Gibson’s IMCA Stock Car, and when the green flag came out, Wallace shot to the lead. A caution on the first lap prompted Casey Woken of Ogallala to restart in the fifteen starting spot. Mike Nichols had a slow go to second spot, and when he reached it, Wallace had a healthy lead. That all disappeared after the eleventh lap, when the caution came out for the disabled car of Kerry Jones of North Platte. Nichols restarted on Wallace’s rear bumper. Knowing Wallace’s experience at Lincoln County, Nichols got by him as fast as he could, taking the lead on the next lap, but not totally clearing him until two laps after that. Mike stayed out front to secure the win and the IMCA Stock Car championship. Wallace finished in second place. Casey Werkmeister of Maywood spent much of the race in third place, where he finished. Casey Woken barely got by Kyle Clough of Wallace at the finish line for fourth place, turning what could have been a bad night into a respectable one. The Osborn brothers, Colton and Cale, each took a heat race win. After winning the IMCA Hobby Stock A Feature last week, Terry Eatherton told the crowd it might had been the last time they saw him race, as he seriously considered retiring after an incredible win. Retirement hardly last twelve hours, and he was back racing the car in Lexington that Sunday night. Well, Eatherton again took the feature lead at the start of the August 21 race. He would work out to a big lead three times, and each time a caution would come out, bringing the field back up to him. On the third caution, second place Corey Cruzan pulled up alongside him. Happy to see Cruzan in second, as he was running for the points title and would have to be cautious, Eatherton kept the car down low on the track and held him off for his second win in as many weeks. The Cruzan family were ecstatic about Corey’s second place finish, as it earned him his first ever track championship. Heat race and cash dash winner Austin Davis of Benkelman finished in third place. Heat winner Ron Edge of Holyoke, Colorado took fourth place, and newcomer Anthony Martin of Wilcox rounded out the top five. A low number of IMCA Northern SportMods meant as long as Colton Osborn didn’t finish in last place in that division’s A Feature, he would have the points title. Bryan Herrick did everything he could, taking the lead and holding off heat winner Shane Stout of North Platte when he attempted to take the top spot with two laps to go in earning the win. However, Osborn stayed out of trouble and finished in the third spot. Chad Young of Imperial finished in fourth place. Fifth place was given to Tim Cooper of North Platte after the original fourth place did not go to the scale or tech area. Ed Milne and his crew at Lincoln County Raceway would like to thank the fans, the drivers, and the sponsors who helped make the 2010 racing season at Lincoln County Raceway a good one
