Colton Osborn Wins Over-Exciting Stock Car Feature By Darin Racek LEXINGTON, NE (August 22, 2010) - It was the final night of the season for Dawson County Raceway in Lexington, and the drivers came out to race hard to the finish. Some might have raced too hard, which caused hard feelings after the races. David Murray, Jr. of Oberlin, Kansas, Colton Osborn of Cozad, Shane Stout of North Platte, and Anthony Martin of Wilcox had no hard feelings, but they also had the feature wins. Murray, Mike Nichols of Harlan, Iowa, Osborn, and Jim Buss of Blue Hill also earned track championships in their respective divisions. Despite Mike Nichols having the points wrapped up in the IMCA Stock Car division, most people figured it would be a spirited feature. Kyle Werkmeister of Maywood too the lead over the eighteen car field at the start of race, but would relinquish the lead to brother Casey on lap five. The Werkmeisters were joined at the front by heat winning brothers Colton and Cale Osborn of Cozad, and the fun was on. Cash dash winner Nichols joined in on the fun, and had moved into third. During the battle forward, his nosepiece was knocked loose and finally fell off on the tenth lap, prompting a caution. He was able to maintain his position on the restart. Colton Osborn made a charge to the front and got by heat winner Casey Werkmeister for the lead on the next lap. On the next circuit, Cale and Casey made contact in corner three, creating a caution. Werkmeister went to the pits, then rejoined Cale at the back for the restart. While the two of them tried to work through the field, Colton and Nichols were joined at the front by Casey Woken of Ogallala. Woken got by Nichols, then began working on Osborn. Much like in the cash dash, he fell a little short in obtaining the victory. Brandon Clough of Wallace finished in fourth place, and Ozzie Romero of Cozad finished in fifth place. After the race, a fight broke out which required the start of the Modified A Feature to be delayed for over ten minutes. The instigator was disqualified and sent home early. Order literally resumed for the IMCA Modified A Feature, as the fifteen starters ran the twenty lap event without a caution. David Murray took the lead from Bo Egge of Kearney on lap seven and had a straightaway lead over fellow heat winner Jeremy Frenier of Fort Morgan, Colorado. Egge held onto third place. Cole Hodges of Ogallala had a spirited battle with Josh Sabin of North Platte on the track and earned fourth spot. Murray had the points championship secured after last week’s win. The IMCA Hobby Stocks also ran their race without a stoppage during their fifteen lap event. “The Flying Woodchuck” Chuck Ledbetter, Jr. of Loomis blasted out to the lead at the beginning of the race, but did not stay high enough on the track to prevent Anthony Martin to use his favorite line to take command on lap three. Martin has had to take a lot of grief in the past week after driving off corner three while leading the previous week, so while he was driving high, he was staying away from the upper lip of the track. Dillon Thompson of Campbell made a late run at him, but could not deny Martin from redemption and his third win of the year. Point champion Jim Buss of Blue Hill ended the night in third place. Jim Rayburn of Gibbon ran tougher in the feature than his heat race to go from tenth at the start to fourth place at the finish. Eddyville racer Kevin Hagan finished in fifth. Lonnie Greuter of Grand Island and Martin were the winners of the Hobby Stock heat races. Mike McCance of Lexington got the “Atta boy” award for lending Ben Hobbs his race car for the A Feature after Hobbs’s car broke in the heat race, helping him maintain second in points by a single point. The IMCA SportMod A Feature seemed like a legends race, with many of the drivers having success in previous years in other classes. Heat race winner Denny Egge of Kearney, a star in many classes in the 80’s and 90’s, took the front spot at the beginning of the fifteen lap event. On lap five, a competitor of his in the mid-1980’s, Robby Leonard, was able to find his way by. Leonard was coming off an A Feature win at Doniphan in a Late Model the night before, and had full intention of duplicating the feat in his SportMod. Shane Stout, a previous track champion in the Stock Car class, found a groove up top that was good for his car, passed Leonard on lap ten, and went hard for five more laps to take the checkered flag first. Leonard finished in second place. Colton Osborn finished in third place, but the finish was good enough for the points title in the class, which gave him two for the year, Lexington’s and North Platte’s. Bryan Herrick of Curtis finished in fourth place. Egge was credited with fifth after the fifth place finisher failed to go to the scale or tech. After the races, mechanics’ races and a powder puff were run. Someone driving Michael Zerr’s #89 car won the eight car Hobby Stock mechanic race. Seth Hagan of Kearney jumped into Jim’s Hagan’s Stock Car and looked good winning the Stock Car event. Kraig Osborn of Cozad, Colton’s uncle and a former Late Model driver, waxed the SportMod field. Casey Woken drove brother Cole Hodges’ Modified and had an impressive run to the finish. After determining the top two drivers in the powder puff race were guys, Sheri Mlady in a Modified and Ashley Hill in a Stock Car were credited as the top female drivers in the event. Promoters Allen and Lou Wissmann would like to thank everyone for their support of Dawson County Raceway in the 2010 season.
