NORTH PLATTE, NE (June 4, 2011) - It was “Relay at The Races” Night at Lincoln County Raceway, a night where Relay for Life teams come out to the track and set up booths to raise money for the American Cancer Society, and a good crowd was on hand to support them and the racers. The racers might have confused “Relay” with “Marathon”, as several cautions in many of the A Features slowed down the action at times. When the night was over, Zach Schultz of North Platte, Bryan Herrick of Curtis, Colton Osborn of Cozad, Austin Davis of Benkelman, and Brad Bayne of Greeley, Colorado survived all of the races to take the A Feature wins. Zach Schultz started in row two of the IMCA Modified A Feature, but took the lead from Terry Houchin of North Platte on lap three. He built a fair lead over the rest of the field when the only caution period on lap nine bunched up the field. Schultz again amassed a fair lead over second place Jim Mlady of North Platte and the rest of the field when Jeremy Frenier of Fort Morgan, Colorado made his move by heat winner Mlady and set his sights on the lead. Time ran out for him to catch Schultz, who thought it was the perfect time to end as he dropped a cylinder at the finish line. Mlady held onto third place. Cole Hodges of Ogallala and Dan Carl of North Platte rounded out the top five. The other IMCA Modified heat race was won by Andrew Dillenburg of North Platte. The IMCA Northern SportMod class increased again, as twenty cars came to race on the second of nine Burger King Challenge nights for the class. Some over-rambunctiousness and inexperience in the field slowed down a race that had some of the top drivers around and some other drivers running a very good event. Bryan Herrick, who has had trouble during five of his six A Feature starts this year in the area, took the lead on lap three. Behind him, Colton Osborn, Shane Stout of North Platte, and Tyler Frye of Belleville, Kansas jockeyed to see who would challenge him for the spot. Each one took turns at second place, with Stout taking it last from Frye after the final restart with two laps to go. Herrick would have no mechanical issues and let the battle behind him aid him to his first win of the year. Stout and Herrick were heat race winners, as well as Jacob Adler out of Holyoke, Colorado. Colton Osborn had his three-win streak snapped in the SportMods, but still earned his fourth feature win in as many race weeks in North Platte. Twenty cars started the IMCA Stock Car A Feature with heat winner Justin Bussell of Imperial on the pole. Bussell shot out with a big lead, but couldn’t keep it on the bottom side. Osborn started in seventh spot, and on lap seven, found his way underneath the Imperial driver for the lead. Bussell would fall back many spots, but recovered with a fourth place finish. Osborn’s task was not done once he got to the lead. He felt his car was not the fastest, but if he could control the low groove, he could obtain the win. Jesse Taylor of Fort Morgan, the May 21 winner and a heat winner this night caught Osborn and challenged for the lead. After a restart with three laps to go, he had a run on the Cozad driver in corner two, but got on the brakes a little hard rather than slam into the side of him, and the car went around, creating another caution and sending Taylor to the back. Casey Werkmeister of Maywood inherited the spot, but ended up having to battle heat winner Charley Brown of Maxwell for second spot and not forcing Osborn about first place. The IMCA Hobby Stock A Feature started out with the Ron Edge in the lead, a winner last Sunday at his hometown track in Holyoke, Colorado. Ron did not set the car up tight enough for the track, and that allowed Austin Davis to slip by for the lead. Cautions kept the field close and aided heat and cash dash winner Michael “Woody” Woodhead of Holyoke, Colorado to move into second place. Woodhead was getting great starts on restarts, and had one more shot at Davis on a restart with six laps to go. Davis would have none of it and earned the win. Corey Cruzan of Maxwell had his three feature win streak snapped, but still kept the points lead with a third place finish. Edge finished in fourth, while Scott Gibson of North Platte rounded out the top five. The Outlaw Vintage Lite Racing Assocation of eastern Nebraska came out to North Platte to run, and picked up cars from Western Kansas and Colorado. The Baynes from Greeley, Colorado, Brad and Kris, flexed muscle early by winning their heat races. The A Feature did not start well for Kris, as on the opening lap of the second try, the cars in front of him spun. Kris Bayne clipped one of the cars and went for a roll, ending his night. Brad found himself in the lead after early leader Mark Bruder of Crete had mechanical issues, which handed the lead over to his teammate Brandon Spanjer of Crete. On lap six, Spanjer spun, handing the lead over to Brad Bayne. The remaining nine laps went without a caution, and Bayne had a huge lead over second place Steve Morgan of Garden City, Kansas. Garden City was also represented in the next two spots, by Bryan Harkness and Ken Morgan, Steve’s uncle. Spanjer came back to finish in fifth place. Promoter Ed Milne and staff have a very short turnaround time, as the next night of racing will be Tuesday night, June 7. It is the annual NebraskaLand National Bank “Run For The Money”, a special night with an added purse for the four classes. Racing will begin at 7 p.m.
