McCOOK, NE (June 10, 2011) - With the second half of the race program rained out on June 3, that meant those features would be run before the regular show on June 10. That meant ten features on the 10th, and McCook Speedway was able to come up with ten different feature winners. Darren Berry of McCook, Howard Van Dyke of Clay Center, Kansas, Charles Stryker of Eddyville, Jeremy Frenier of Fort Morgan, Colorado, Casey Werkmeister of Maywood, Nick Tubbs of Colby, Kansas, Chuck Ledbetter of Loomis, Anthony Martin of Wilcox, Colton Osborn of Cozad, and Shane Stout were the ten winners, which all happen to be from ten different towns. The opening IMCA 305 Sprint Car A Feature had Darren Berry on the pole, who zoomed out to a comfortable lead before the only caution on lap seven. After the restart, he maintained his lead over Randy Bantam of Norton, Kansas to the end. Bill Hays of Edison finished in third place, with John Webster of North Platte and Troy Edwards of McCook finishing out the top five finishes. The second Sprint feature was all heat winner’s Howard Van Dyke’s race, as he took the lead on the opening lap, kept his car in the high groove, and stayed ahead of Darren Berry to take the victory. Webster was able to take third spot, with the aid of a Bill Hays spare wing, Douglas finished in fourth, and Hays finished where he started, fifth place. For the first time in at least two years, Charles Stryker was able to enjoy victory in the IMCA Modified division. Andrew Dillenburg of North Platte brought out the only caution, that on lap one after he lost his drive shaft. After that, Stryker opened up a margin on the rest of the field. Jeremy Frenier passed Brent Bohmont of McCook with two laps to go, but it was not enough time to both catch and pass “The Eddyville Flyer“. Bohmont, Brett Smith of Log Lane Village, Colorado, and Ronnie Wallace of North Platte rounded out the top five. Later in the evening, Frenier took the heat race victory, then took the A Feature lead from Zach Schultz of North Platte on lap four. Schultz ended up battling Brett Smith for the second spot while Jeremy flew away for his third win of the week, with the others coming Sunday and Tuesday. Bohmont finished one spot lower in the second feature, while Don Hagan, Jr. of McCook finished in the top five in the late event. Seventeen IMCA Stock Cars started the makeup A main, and seventeen cars finished. No one led two consecutive laps until Casey Werkmeister was able to complete the feat on laps four and five. Lloyd Meeske of Champion was one of those early leaders, and pressed Werkmeister for a return to the position, but Casey was not in a giving mood, and gained the win. Dave Plowman of Gretna and fellow fifth row starter Cale Osborn of Cozad finished in third and fourth places, respectively. Kyle Werkmeister of Maywood finished in fifth. The second feature started as many cars, and had only one caution period. Nick Tubbs made his first appearance at McCook Speedway in a Stock Car this year the one where he received his first win of the year and do his Spider-Man climb up the fence. It wasn’t easy, and had pressure from Meeske, Casey Werkmeister, and Jesse Taylor of Fort Morgan, Colorado near the halfway point. Meeske almost lost two spots behind a lapped car, but the caution period help revert the field to the last completed lap, and he in second. Second was all he could do. Werkmeister, a heat winner, stayed ahead of Taylor for third. Bob Rutherford, the other heat winner, was the fifth place runner. Colton Osborn made it to the races with his IMCA Northern SportMod just as the races started in the evening, and barely had it in the staging area in time for the makeup A Feature. He took the lead from Bryan Herrick of Curtis on lap four, who eventually broke and packed up to go home shortly after that, and drove like he did to make it to the races. Jamey Kennicutt of Gothenburg made it two Dawson County drivers in the top two spots. Shane Stout earned the third place finish, while Denny Egge of Kearney went from twelfth to fourth in the event, his first time there in a SportMod. Matt Matson of McCook finished out the top five. Hunter Cantrall of Overton sat on the pole for the second SportMod feature and drove the high line like he did in the heat races. Unfortunately, he went too high on lap three, and handed the lead over to his fellow heat race winner Shane Stout. Colton Osborn followed closely behind, and the two put on a great, clean duel for the remainder of the event. In the last couple of laps, Stout was able to use his line to gain a little breathing room from Osborn at the finish line. Kennicutt took third place. Cody DeWester of McCook had a small fire under the hood in the first feature, replaced the melted parts, and finished fourth in the second main. Egge’s fifth place gave him two top five finishes for the night. When it’s been approximately twenty years since your last feature win, you are due. Chuck Ledbetter had not won one since he drove in the Bronco class in the early 90’s at Dawson County Raceway. On Friday night, in the opening event, Ledbetter put his IMCA Hobby Stock into the lead at the beginning of the race. The track was still slick from a watering ten minutes before, but “The Flying Woodchuck” danced gingerly and kept Austin Davis of Benkelman in the rear window for his first ever IMCA Hobby Stock victory. Newcomer Anthony Martin of Wilcox took third place, while Ray Caldwell of McCook finished in fourth. The second feature for the Hobby Stocks saw Anthony Martin get to the lead right away, and like Ledbetter, he, too did what he could to keep Davis in his rear window. The strategy worked, giving Martin his first feature win of the year. Second place Davis did win the heat. Ledbetter took third place, meaning the top three drivers all averaged a second place finish for the night. Caldwell could not improve his average, finishing again in fourth place. With a few weeks off to recuperate, McCook Speedway will race again, weather permitting, on Friday night, July 1. The gates will open at 6 p.m., and the races will start at 8 p.m., Central Time.
