Out of State Drivers Fare Well at McCook Speedway By Darin Racek McCOOK, NE (July 8, 2011) - McCook Speedway raced with a typical theme, potential showers in the area, but was able to have the races completed and trophies handed out before any substantial rain hit the area. Most of the winners were from out of the area, as Howard Van Dyke of Clay Center, Kansas, Jeremy Frenier and Jesse Taylor of Fort Morgan, Colorado, Colton Osborn of Cozad, and Austin Davis of Benkelman took the top spots. While all of the drivers wanted to win the IMCA 305 Sprint Car A Feature, it seemed as though no one wanted to lead it. Ron Hadley of Norton, Kansas led his first ever A Feature lap, but looped his car on the second lap. Fellow hometown driver Randy Bantam took the top spot, but on lap three, he drove off of corner one. John Webster of North Platte inherited the lead but could not find a place where his car would stick. While the heat winner slipped around while leading, Howard Van Dyke found the high line to his liking. With three laps to go, Van Dyke used the high line to slide by Webster and drove off for his second win in seven days, winning the feature at Norton, Kansas last Saturday night. Webster was happy with his time up front and his second place finish. McCook racer Darren Berry finished in third place. Greg Reiners of Mccook and Mike Madden of Norton, Kansas earned their first top five finishes. Jeremy Frenier won his third consecutive IMCA Modified A Feature at McCook Speedway. The Colorado driver was involved in an accident in his heat race and had to be towed back to the pits. The feature went much better, as he also used the high line to take the lead, getting his from heat winner Don Hagan, Jr. of McCook on lap three. The only caution came out the next lap, and then Frenier went on unabated. Hagan finished in second place. Ronnie Wallace of McCook had to get by Charles Stryker of Eddyville a couple of times before he earned third place. Brent Bohmont of McCook was the fifth place finisher. After the IMCA Stock Cars got two cautions out of their systems before two laps were completed, the field settled down and went the last fourteen laps without a yellow. Kyle Werkmeister of Maywood took the lead after an exciting three-wide battle for the spot with fellow heat winner Kyle Clough of Wallace and Jesse Taylor. However, Werkmeister went to the pits during the second yellow, and that handed the lead to Taylor. Jesse built up a good lead until his transmission started to fail. Smoke coming out of the rear of the car and the way Dave Plowman of Gretna reeled him in at the end were two indications of problems. Taylor knew he was there as the took the white flag, so he protected the bottom line and the car held on long enough for him to take the win. While Plowman finished in second place, he actually made more money for the night, as he won the 50/50 raffle. Larry Pollmann of McCook had to make some late passes on the outside lane before the could finish in third spot. Clough and Cale Osborn were two of them who had to watch Pollmann, who had a birthday on Thursday, show them where the line was, later than they needed. The IMCA Northern SportMod A Feature was not a patient race with patient drivers, as the race was slowed six times for yellow flags. It was paced early on by the yellow car of Bryan Herrick of Curtis. While the yellows slowed him up at the front, they aided Colton Osborn to move forward from his fourth row starting spot. On the seventh lap, Osborn passed his fellow heat winner on his way to the finish line. Kerry Jones of North Platte had a car that looked like someone took a sledge hammer to it by the end of the night, but he hammered the gas enough to take the third spot. Max Pollmann of McCook finished in fourth place during his first appearance of the year at the raceway. Jamey Kennicutt of Gothenburg had a rough night on his way to a fifth place finish, but it should have been good enough to take the points lead. The IMCA Hobby Stock class nearly doubled in size from the week before. That didn’t deter Austin Davis from taking the lead on the opening lap and opening up a lead on Chuck Ledbetter of Loomis. With two laps to go, Jason Stephens of McCook and Richard Boon of Benkelman got together, forcing a caution period and the end to Stephens’s night. On the restart, Ledbetter had a good run on Davis coming into corner four and had to make the decision of ramming the heat winner or going below the cone. He went below the cone and was moved to the back. Boon inherited second place, but could not shake Davis out of his rhythm. McCook Speedway will take next week off, but is planning on having more racing action on Friday night, July 22, starting at 8 p.m. Central Time.
