McCOOK, NE (August 19) - A dark cloud went by McCook Speedway Friday night, but it did not go overhead and it did not drop rain close to the track, and that allowed the final night of the season to be completed. Darren Berry of McCook, Andrew Dillenburg of North Platte, Dave Plowman of Gretna, Colton Osborn of Cozad, and Richard Boon of Benkelman completed the night with A Feature wins. Berry, Plowman, Osborn, Jeremy Frenier of Fort Morgan, Colorado, and Austin Davis of Benkelman completed what they needed to do to earn track championships. The IMCA Stock Car points had a tie up top between Dave Plowman and Cale Osborn of Cozad. Both drivers won their heats, then started on row four of the A Feature. There was quite a bit of good racing during the twenty lap event, made more exciting by the drivers going caution-free. Dave Plowman took the lead from Bob Chalupa on lap eight and left the rest to race for second. Osborn finally made his way to second place on lap twelve, but could not close in on Plowman to try to earn the win or points title. Nick Tubbs of Colby, Kansas did all he could do to stay ahead of Jesse Taylor of Fort Morgan, Colorado for fourth place. Chalupa finished in fifth place. Jamey Kennicutt of Gothenburg had a two point lead on Colton Osborn and Shane Stout going into the IMCA Northern SportMod A Feature, but was involved in an accident right away. On the restart, Matt Matson of McCook found his way to the lead, only to be passed two laps later by Osborn. Later that lap, heat winner Bryan Herrick of Curtis checked up with his car, and before he could get it going again, was hit by Kennicutt, who had a momentum he could not stop. Herrick’s car was towed off after the incident. Despite two more caution periods, Colton held his line, and stayed ahead of Stout to pick up the win. Matt Matson stayed in third place ahead of Kennicutt, and that gave Osborn the one point cushion he needed for the track title. Darren Berry continued his winning streak in the IMCA 305 Sprint Car class, but he had to work for it. Tommy Lee Williams of North Platte has had many mechanical woes this year, After his dad, Ron Williams, made some phone calls, they made some repairs that made him fast and able to finish. Williams won the heat race, then raced to the lead at the start of the A Feature. A fair lead over Darren Berry was nulled when Mike Madden of Norton, Kansas stalled after lap seven, and that allowed Berry to make the final lead change on lap nine. Williams held onto second place, while his teammate Mike Saathoff of North Platte nipped Randy Bantam of Norton, Kansas at the line for third place. Ron Hadley of Norton, Kansas was the fifth place finisher. In the IMCA Modified heat race, Andrew Dillenburg drove off corner two after getting too low and finding a slick spot. Charles Stryker of Eddyville took that win. In the feature, Dillenburg stayed away from the edge, but did jump the berm a few times, keeping him honest and keeping Don Hagan, Jr. of McCook close near the finish. Close only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades, and Dillenburg didn’t need to pull the pin as he cruised to the finish line with the win. Track champion Jeremy Frenier finished in third spot with something broken in the left front of his car, then had to be towed to the pits after the races. Zach Hilzer, also of Fort Morgan, Colorado, earned a fourth place finish in his second ever visit to the track. Richard Boon had some work to do on his IMCA Hobby Stock before the A Feature, but he was able to put the car together in time for the main event. Chuck Ledbetter of Loomis put his “Thrifty Nickel” in the lead on the opening lap, but Boon would get by on lap two and pace the rest of the event. Austin Davis would later get by Ledbetter as well for second place. The McCook Speedway crew would like to thank everyone who supported the track in the 2011 season, and wishes promoter Jerry Bantam a speedy recovery after heart bypass surgery last week. ************************************
