Results from Buena Vista Raceway Wed April 19
By Denny Grabenbauer
BUENA VISTA, Ia. (April 19, 2006) - After a beautiful opening night, the weather
took a wild turn this past Wednesday at the Buena Vista Raceway where shirt
sleeve’s from one prior week went to as many cloths as possible for “Speeds Golf
Cart” Night and week number two. A strong southern breeze would blow directly
into the grandstands as many people decided not to get dressed up for winter
night, but to wait for warmer nights ahead. “When promoting weekly race events
in Iowa, or any place as far as that goes, you have to take the good with the
bad,” said promoter Lee Meyer. “Last week was the good, and this week was the
bad, and next week who knows.” One race fan that was not stopped by the winter
like weather was Kayla Stubbe who was celebrating her 16TH birthday. “Now that I
can drive there is only one place that I wanted to be and that was at the races
where I can watch other people drive, because maybe someday I might be driving
on the race track.”
After the National Anthem at 7:30 it was business as usual for the eighty race
teams that would make there way to the raceway. Just as things were off and
running, it didn’t take long for the night to be slowed as rookie driver Chris
Duitsman would find the hard way to end his night as he rolled his car off of
turn three during the second race of the night. He climbed from the car unhurt,
but badly damaging his racecar.
All of the heat races were run in record time as the feature events began to
pull out onto the raceway. Jess Bieret, a rookie driver in the Rasmussen Ford
Bomber division would take the lead in their ten-lap event. His lead would be
short lived because Devin Smith would take the top spot and go on to win the
green to checkered event. Last week’s winner with the clean car, Adam Hicks
would finish second followed by Eric Puhrman and Tim Hansen.
Donovan Smith would lead from start to finish in the Storm Lake Truck & Trailer
I.M.C.A. Hobby Stock feature. Smith would erase his last place finish from one
week earlier to post the victory. Luke Wanninger would put the pressure on Smith
through the entire event to finish, and would finish second. Tony Pogeler and
Matt Mahoney would round out the top four.
Jake Simpson would make in two wins in two weeks in the Storm Lake Honda Artic
Cat 360 B-Mods. Simpson would battle Doug Barglof and Brandon Lucas through out
the event and would not take the lead until the final lap to score the win. On
the final lap the top four would change and at the end it would be Dan Hanselman
second followed by Harvey VanDeWeerd and last year’s track champion Mark White.
It would be three wide from the drop of the green flag for the Scooters Bar &
Grill I.M.C.A. Stock Cars as Bud Mattson would take the lead from the drop of
the green flag. Rookie Randy Lawrey would give Mattson the early challenge but
it would be Brian Blessington who would put the pressure on Mattson and take the
lead on lap six and would go on to score the victory. Brian Mattson and Dave
Smith would finish second and third with Bud Matson coming home forth.
The final event of the night would be the Fitzpatrick Auto Center I.M.C.A.
Modified 20-lap feature. For the second week in a row, many yellow flags and one
red flag would mar the event. Jeff Stephens would flip wildly done the back
straight a way on lap two, bringing out the red flag. Stephens car would have to
be removed from the track by two wreckers, Jeff climbed from the car unhurt.
Leon Reuter would lead the first part of the race before Ricky Stephen would
take the top spot. Mechanical trouble would send Stephen to the pits, but it
would be Jay Noteboom who would charge from the back of the pack after spinning
on lap five to take the lead and go on to score the win. Mike Hansen, Clay
Christensen and Reuter would follow Noteboom across the finish line to end the
racing action on a very cold night at the raceway.
Week number three will roar to life next Wednesday night with KPTH Fox 44 night
at the races. Hot laps begin at 6:45 and the first race of the night will get
underway at 7:30.
