The Hamlton County Speedway in full swing with the return of
the Dinsdale Motors IMCA Late Models.
By: Ryan Bergeson
RADCLIFFE, IA (May 6, 2006) - A gorgeous Saturday evening brought the cars and
fans out to share a night at the Speedway. The smooth racing surface allowed the
drivers to put on a clean and fast show that gave the fans something to cheer
about. With the return of the IMCA Late Models and our fourth different winner
in four weeks of racing in the Hobby Stock division, it was truly a fun night at
The Historic Half Mile.
The first feature of the evening was the Econo Stocks. Perne Struchen, who was
upside down on Friday night, went to work to get the machine ready, and he would
not disappoint. Struchen would lead the race as he was challenged by T.J.
Mortenson as the laps counted off. Mortenson would push into the final turn and
allow Struchen to pick up the Feature win. Mortenson, Austin Wolfgram and Mason
Gilbert would round out the top four. Mortenson and Donovan Nokes would pick up
heat race wins.
The next battle on the speedway was the Performance Electric Hobby Stock
Feature. Heading into night number 4, we were looking for another new feature
winner in four different weeks and Kevin Schmauss would come to call. Schmauss
would lead the race as Mark Haglund would pick off cars one by one, finally
making it to the runner up spot. As Haglund would challenge, Corey Roe and Curt
Hook would also make their way through the field. Heading into the last turn,
Haglund would gas it up on the high side and make heavy contact with the wall
and allow Schmauss to power to his first feature win of 2006 at The Hamilton
County Speedway. Curt Hook, Corey Roe and Brad Schipper would round out the top
four. Haglund and Schmauss would pick up heat race wins. The Hobby Stock
division goes to show how competitive it has been at The Hamilton County
Speedway every Saturday night as the fans have yet to see a repeat winner.
The Conley’s Trucking Limited Modifieds made their way onto the speedway and the
fans saw a great battle for the lead between Matt Lettow and Brian Stein.
Through several circuits and restarts, Stein would brush the top groove and
Lettow was faithful to the bottom of the racetrack. Finally, going into the last
turn Lettow could not make the pass coming off the corner and Stein would
outlast Lettow for the race win. Ryan Giles and Ryan Gustin would round out the
top four. Giles and Stein would pick up heat race wins. Nate Caruth would win
the Karl Chevrolet Hard Charger Award presented by Bryan Denekas.
Next out onto the speedway was the Neighbors Heating, Cooling, and Plumbing
Stock Cars. Jason Wagoner would power his way to the top spot. As Wagoner led,
Dennis Plain, Mitchell Griffith, and Joe Paullin would swap the runner up spot.
As the laps counted down, the fans would see battles three and four wide for the
positions fifth on back. Finally, Griffith was able to make his way to second
but could not catch Wagoner. Jason Wagoner would grab the win and be followed by
Griffith, Joe Paullin, and Lance Deal. Jared Dirks and Jason Wagoner would pick
up heat race wins.
Another class that has been very competitive this season with three different
winners in three nights of racing action has been the West Wind Logistics
Modifieds. With Scott Olson, Jason Wagoner, and Joe McBirnie already winning one
feature, it was time to see if we could make it number four. Bob Sutherland
would lead early in the race. As Sutherland worked the cushion, Olson would try
the bottom side. Finally, exiting turn two, Olson was able to make the pass
bringing Jimmy Gustin with him. The caution flag would come out realigning the
field one more time and that put Gustin on the back door step. Gustin would try
one more time to make the pass but Olson would be too strong. Scott Olson would
be the first repeat winner in 2006 in the modified division followed by Gustin,
Jason Wagoner and Bob Sutherland. There is no question how competitive this
class has been this early in the season and with a a lot of good drivers still
looking for their first win, its only going to get better.
Finally, we have waited patiently through a long winter and a few washouts by
Mother Nature, The IMCA Late Models presented by Dinsdale Motors would make
their debut in 2006. Al Johnson would lead when the green flag dropped. Several
times through the turns he would be challenged on the inside by Jeremy Grady and
the outside by Jeff Aikey. Aikey was able to power to the outside one more time
and he found himself in the captains chair. As Aikey led, Darrel DeFrance would
come from the fifth row all the way to the second position. DeFrance would try
for several laps to real in the race leader but time was not on his side. Aikey
picked up the Feature win followed by DeFrance, Jeremy Grady, and Craig Jacobs.
Jeff Aikey and Darrel DeFrance would pick up the heat race wins.
