Veloz Topps Big Field of Modifieds at Davenport
by Mike McGuire
Davenport, IA (May 19, 2006) – After last week’s rainout, it was time to get
back to racing at the Davenport Speedway, Friday night. Once again the car count
topped the one hundred mark causing the drivers to race that much harder for
each and every position.
The V-8 Modified class again had a huge field of quality racecars. Competition
was fierce with thirty-five drivers trying to make the field of twenty starters
in the feature. Once the field was set the 20-lap A-main went almost all twenty
laps non-stop. The only caution flag of the race came after the leader had taken
the white flag, ending the race.
Pole sitter Milo Veloz Jr. took the lead from the drop of the green and led the
entire distance for his first win at Davenport since July 2004. Doug Crampton
moved quickly up to the second position and would finish in that spot. Donovan
Lodge started third and finished third. Marty Diercks ran a strong race to take
fourth with Chris Giegle hanging on to fifth. Only one of the twenty cars that
started the race, failed to finish on the lead lap.
Modified heat race wins went to Thad Wilson, Jerry Connors, and Rick Ratliff.
Matt Stein won the semi-feature that started 17 cars.
Kevin Blum led an onslaught of #12’s as he captured the IMCA Late Model feature.
Blum in his red #12, took the lead on lap 11 and led the rest of the way for the
win. Ray Guss Jr. in a black and blue #12 came from his fourth row starting spot
to finish second behind Blum. Tom Darbyshire (not driving a #12) started
directly behind Guss and finished there in third. Rick Wages (#11) started on
the outside pole, led a couple of laps and then held on to finish fourth. The
third #12 in the feature, Doug Nigh, rounded out the top five.
Late Model heat race wins went to Wages, Nigh, and Hershel Roberts. Jim Sandusky
won the B-main.
The Street Stock feature went to Brad Tyler of Moscow. Tyler jumped out into the
lead after starting on the outside pole position. Tyler managed to fend off Tim
Koehler and Randy Exline to take the win. Koehler and Exline would finish second
and third respectively. Korey Peterson and Corey Booth rounded out the top five.
Dan Klatt and Matt Zumwalt won the heats.
The B-Mod main saw BJ Jackson pass Nick Hixson late in the race to take the
feature win. Hixson held on for second over a charging Mike Fluegel. Jake
Waterman was fourth, and Jeremy Marquette fifth. Pat Fennelly, Jason Pershy, and
Kevin Fitzgibbon were the heat winners.
INEX Legend Car drivers took a moment before their feature to remember a fellow
racer. Ryan VanderBoom of Wisconsin, along with his wife Mindi were killed in a
motorcycle accident earlier this month. VanderBoom had competed in both of the
Davenport Speedway races this year prior to the accident.
When the field did take the green, outside pole sitter Chad Patch held the early
lead. Patch led until he was hunted down by a cluster of cars that were
exchanging positions at a rapid rate. For the second race in a row, it was Keith
Moline that got to Patch first and quickly took the lead. Keith would go on to
take his second straight win of the season. Perry Mitchell had an up and down
race before finishing second. Joel Wyttenbach would finish third, followed by
Rick Harris in fourth and Eric Barth fifth. Warren Ropp and Patch took the
heats.
Justin Kay made it three in a row feature wins in the 4-Cylinder main. Kay
jumped out to the early lead, by passing his brother Dustin and drove to the
victory. Todd Sibley would finish second with John Reedy third. Steven Boyle
came in fourth, and Joe Brimeyer fifth.
