JORGENSEN WITH FIRST WIN AT SHELBY COUNTY SPEEDWAY; JONES
TAKES TWO IN A ROW
by Bonnie Errett
HARLAN, Iowa (May 20, 2006) – Dave Jorgensen dominated to the finish line to
claim his first win in the Late Model feature for NAPA of Harlan night at Shelby
County Speedway. Jeff Jones, who picked up his first win last week, was met by
an ecstatic crew as he reached victory lane in the Modified feature once again.
Vance Tonack took hold of the front position at the start of the I.M.C.A. Late
Model feature ahead of Mark Plowman and Dave Jorgensen. By the end of the first
lap, Jorgensen had second, and two laps later he seized first as Jeff Segebart
moved into third. Jorgensen stretched out into a strong lead, and Jay Stewart
took over fourth. Stewart was looking low and made his way into third with eight
laps remaining. At six to go Barry Sorensen reached fourth. The front runners
spread apart, and Dave Jorgensen smoothly paved the way to the checkered flags
to receive his first win of the season.
The I.M.C.A. Modified feature was initiated by pole sitter Brad Madsen with Dale
Ransom, Jeff Stephens, and Jeff Jones filling out the top four. Stephens quickly
overcame second as Chad Preul traveled to the front of the pack. Four laps in,
Madsen dropped back a few spots and Stephens and Preul found themselves
contending for the lead. Stephens took hold of the position, and Tim Plowman
snatched second with Jones right behind. Jones kept pushing forward and acquired
the lead at the halfway point. Preul fought back around Plowman to regain third
behind Stephens in second, and Jones strode to victory lane for his second week
in a row.
Jim Kruse came from the outside pole to lead the ProAms into the first lap of
their feature ahead of Bill Hargens, and by the end of the first lap, Charles
Grabill clenched third. Coming from a ninth starting position, Matt McAtee took
fourth on the second lap of the race as Charles attained second. Just four laps
in, McAtee was up to third and Charles made his move to take first. Heading into
the next lap, McAtee went low into second as Galen Grabill took the high side
into third. In the inside of turn three with nine to go, McAtee stole first and
left Galen and Charles to battle for second. Galen pulled forward into the spot
and followed McAtee to the checkered flags who claimed his fifth win this year.
Starting on the pole, Dave Plowman was the first leader of the I.M.C.A. Stock
Car feature with Trent Partridge sliding into second in turn two. Josh Filmer
captured third on the second lap, but Keith Knop came from behind and stole the
spot three laps later. That same lap Partridge took over the lead. Knop moved up
to second as Mike Nichols, who started tenth, progressed up to third. At four to
go Nichols grabbed second and took on Partridge for first. Nichols became the
new leader and drove to his second win of the season ahead of a close finish
between Partridge and Knop with Partridge hanging on to second.
The I.M.C.A. Hobby Stock feature took off with Jay Hansen out front, but it was
not long before Brian Snell stole the position. Chuck Madden Jr. fell into
third, and by the end of the fourth lap, Donovan Smith had fourth. Smith worked
his way up to second but got caught up on the high side of the track at five to
go and drifted back to fourth. A caution came out with four laps left, and Smith
regained second at the next start. Smith moved up to take on Snell for first,
but the caution was thrown again to leave the race in a green-white-checkered
finish. In the inside of turn two with two laps remaining, Smith took over the
lead and held off Snell to receive the win for his fourth time this season.
Daniel Mefferd led the JnJ Fabrication Hornets into their feature as Joseph
Mefferd, Andrew Hicks, and Matt Steffens contended for second. Hicks pulled
through with the spot and by the end of the second lap had the lead. Daniel
fought back for first, but Hicks held on as Travis Rust secured fourth behind
Joseph. With two laps to go Joseph went low around Daniel and Hicks to claim
first. Daniel followed into second and Rust was right behind in third. Joseph
led to the end to pick up his third win with Rust taking second just before the
finish line.
Next Saturday the track will feature mechanic races with gates opening at 5:00
pm, hot laps at 6:30 pm, and racing immediately following.
