BAKKEN, SCHMITT, WISE, SMIDT SCORE IN USRA ACTION AT BRITT

BRITT, Ia (June 2) - Week five of the USRA Casey’s General Stores Weekly Racing Series at Pritchard Family Auto Stores Hancock County Speedway was nothing short of exciting on McNeese Tire Night.

The USRA Hobby Stocks started the feature races caution-free. Throughout the race, there was a constant battle for the lead. It seemed as though Tony Smidt was oblivious to the pressure from Randy Hadacek and Calvin Lange as he maintained his aggressive driving to the finish line. Smidt gained his second victory of the season, with Hadacek and Lange coming in second and third, respectively.

John “Mad Dog” Madson was looking to have the same performance as Smidt in his USRA B-Modified feature. From the pole position, Madson pulled into the lead until the second caution. Jeramie Faber stalled in turn 1, allowing the field to catch up to the #22 of Madson. On the restart, J.J. Wise and Logan Brown pulled in front of Madson. The battle continued between the two drivers — both trying the high side and the low side — until the lights in turns 3-4 failed. After about a 10-minute delay, the race concluded with Wise in front. Brown was close behind for second, despite a charge by last week’s feature winner, Jamie Anderson.

It was just another week on McNeese Tire Night for the Junior and Senior Hornets. Colby Fett took advantage of Trever Nelson’s flat tire to take the victory in the Junior Hornet race. Brandon Ostwald continued the domination he showed in the Senior Hornet heat race as the #21 of Ostwald pulled away and dominated the feature as Matt Baker finished second.

In the feature race, the USRA Modifieds gave the fans a battle to remember. After a caution-free first half of the race, a three-way battle for the lead began. It was no surprise that Brad Bakken was part of that battle along with Jeff Feaster and Ed Green. Feaster put up a tough battle until the final two laps. Because of a problem with his brakes, Feaster had to take the corners easy, therefore allowing the aggressive Bakken to take the lead and the checkered.

In a finale that saw four lead changes and one caution, the USRA Stock Car finish was hard to predict. Gary Lalor Jr. pulled into the lead soon to be passed by the #21 of Travis Hoeft. After a short stint in the lead, Hoeft was passed by Ryan Hiscocks. Hiscocks led for much of the race and seemed to have it in his back pocket until the yellow flag waved. On the restart, Hiscocks got a good jump and was using the inside groove to preserve his lead. Tom Schmitt found his own groove on the high side and, after a three-lap battle for the lead, pulled away from Hiscocks to take the lead.

After the race, Hiscocks was nothing short of pleased with his finish.

“After Monday night, I applaud my crew on getting my car ready for tonight,” Hiscocks said. “(Schmitt) is a great competitor. Only he could have made the high side work tonight.”

The USRA Casey’s General Stores Weekly Racing Series continues next Friday, June 9, with Pepsi Night at the Races featuring USRA Modifieds, Stock Cars, B-Modifieds and Hobby Stocks, plus Hornets. Gates will open at 5 p.m., with hot laps at 7:15 and racing at 7:30. Tickets are $9 for adults and $7 for juniors (13-18) and seniors. Children 12 and under are admitted FREE each night.

The Pritchard Family Auto Stores Hancock County Speedway is located 1.3 miles south of US 18 on James St. (turns into Main Ave. and Diagonal and 1st), then 0.5 mile east on 220th Ave., then 0.1 mile north on Jewell Ave. (ESR). For more information call the track hotline at (641) 843-4513.
