It was a beautiful week for number twelve on Wednesday night

By Denny Grabenbauer
BUENA VISTA, IA. (June 28, 2006) - It was a beautiful week for number twelve on
Wednesday night during a KCHE night at the Buena Vista Raceway. Eighty-three
race teams and crews filled the pit area as race fans from as far away as Alaska
and Hawaii were on hand to cheer on their favorite drivers.
Many new drivers would find there way to victory lane in the heat race action as
the night would turn out to be somewhat of a first timers night in the heat
races, then turn into a veterans night for the features. First time heat race
winners would be Merle Bass, Kyle Robinson and Cody Lucas in the Hobby Stock
Class, Tony Ross and Brett Meyer in the B-Mods, Mike Scharn and Roger Tripp in
the Stock Car division and James Slawson in the Modifieds. “I guess that shows
us the type of competition that we have each Wednesday night,” committed
promoter Lee Meyer. “When you have any driver in a field that can win, whether
it be a heat or feature it means that your giving you fans the best show that
you can, and that is what we have here in Alta, good competitive racing.”
First time heat race winners would all take a back seat to the multiple feature
winners in the feature events pulled out onto the speedway. For the second week
in a row, yellow flags would not be dominate through out the night of very good
and close racing.
Jess Bieret who won his first career feature one week ago would appear to be on
his way for another win in the Rasmussen Ford BVR Bomber division, as he pulled
away from the field right from the start, but in post race inspection was found
to have an illegal part on his car and was disqualified handing the win over to
the second place finisher, Devin Smith.
The same fate would affect Jason Grage, as he would lead early and through out
the Storm Lake Artic Cat 360 B-Mod class only to find his win taken away because
of a post race inspection. Matt Sangwin would cross the line in second and would
be declared the winner, posting his third win of the year.
Kyle Robinson who was celebrating his wedding annivsary would dodge three yellow
flags in the opening lap of racing in the Storm Lake Truck & Trailer I.M.C.A.
Hobby Stock feature and would hold the top spot until lap six at the half way
point of the race. Past lap seven, Dustin Smith would move to the out side of
Robinson and make the pass for the lead, and would go on to score his third win
of the year. Donovan Smith, fresh off of his Shoot-Out win at Marshalltown the
night before would finish second followed by Robinson.
The red flag would come out before one lap would be completed in the Scooters
Bar & Grill I.M.C.A. Stock Car feature when Brian Blessington and Chris Ullrich
would make contact, knocking off a fuel line, which resulted in a blast of fire
coming from the race cars, sitting in turn four. Both drivers were unhurt but
were out of contention for the remainder of the race. Mark Stanley would take
the lead on the restart and lead until lap four when points leader David Smith
would again flex his mussel to make the pass for the lead and go on to score his
fifth win of the season. Jason Mickelson, Brian Mattson and Randy Lawrey would
finish in the top four.
Three drivers would share and battle for the lead in the Fitzpatrick Auto Center
I.M.C.A. Modified feature before one driver would again emerge as the evenings
feature winner. James Slawson, Brad Williams and Joel Ziegmann would all
challenged for the top position in the early going. Yellow flags on laps eight,
thirteen and seventeen would slow the twenty-lap event as Ziegmann and Williams
would take a share of the lead during almost every lap. With two laps to go, the
pair would be side by side with Williams working the low side and Ziegmann
staying up high. It would stay a two-car battle until the checkered flag with
Ziegmann going on to score his third feature win of the season. Williams would
finish a close second followed by Jeff Stephens and Brian Schmidt.
Next Wednesday night, will the forth of July special night along with the Kyle
Sutter Memorial event. Many special events are planned such as a Stock Car King
of the Hill race, a Military Flyover, a giant fireworks display and much much
more. The racing will begin with hot laps at 6:45 and the first green flag of
the evening will be waved at 7:30.
