Kay Picks Up Double Pay Bonus as Schlmitz Gets His First Win
by Ed Potter
MAQUOKETA, IA. (July 8, 2006) - Even with some very light sprinkles off and
on as the Saturday night program went on Jackson County Speedway got in one heck
of a show. One Hundred and ten race cars showed up to compete and did a great
job of entertaining the fans. Bannon Bechen came from his third place starting
spot to lead the first lap of the 4 Stock feature then the races only caution
flew. On the restart young Justin Kay took over and never looked back as a real
battle went on behind him. Kay went on for his second Jackson County win of the
season and also picked up the Jackson County Double Pay Bonus as he had won the
night before at Davenpaort Speedway. Bechen held on for second with eleventh
place starter and point leader, Dan Mohr took third. Justins brother, Dustin Kay
came home fourth with Jeremy Campbell fifth. Justin Kay, Shane Marcov and Tom
Lamey won the heat races.
The Trophy Truck feature also was a single caution race with Jed Holland taking
the early lead. On lap two heat winner, Alan Staskal charged out front and
stayed there to go on for his third win this year. Joe Bonney was right there
putting the pressure on Staskal but had to settle for second. Bruce Yoerger took
third followed by Ethan Milder and Holland.
Hobby Stock feature third place starter, Jeff Specht charged into the lead on
lap one and had things pretty much under control when a mid-race caution flew as
Neil Patchin and point leader Sheldon Hunter both flew off turn one with Hunter
doing a roll-over. The car landed back on it's wheels and Hunter climbed out
unhurt. On the restart Specht went back out front but he then caused the next
caution at lap nine, as flames shot out from under the car. Specht returned to
the action from the rear as last place starter, Steve Harms took over the lead
on the restart. Harms went on for his fourth win of the season with Bryan Klein
a strong second. Kevin Brame was third with Specht coming back to take fourth.
Tim Bader rounded out the top five. Don Marcov Sr and Brame won the heats.
There was only one caution in the B Modified feature and it was before the first
lap was scored, but it was a tough one as Greg Mickelson rolled his car off turn
four. Mickelson also walked away wihich was the good news. when the race got
restarted Matt Irwin grabbed the lead. On lap six Shawn Flagel moved out front
with Keith Feller in hot pursuit. At Lap nine Feller took over the point and
went on for his second win in a row and third win of the season. Flagel held on
for second with Irwin holding on for third. Point leader B.J. Jackson took
fourth with Jarrett Franzen fifth. Flagel, Dave Bielenberg, and Feller were the
heat winners.
Pole sitter, Mitch Schmitz grabbed the lead of the Street Stock feature and held
it flag to flag for his first win of the year. A third lap caution brought Terry
Rittmer up to challenge, he couldn't do anything with Schmitz. A tenth lap
caution saw Brian Bonney move into second and put som hard pressure on Schmitz
but Bonney had to settle for second. Jon Poll was third with Rittmer holding on
for fourth. Shane Oberbreckling rounded out the top five. Allan Milder and
Oberbreckling took the heat wins.
John Irwin started on the pole of the non-stop, caution free V8 Modified feature
and took the early lead. At lap seven second heat winner, Ray Cox Jr went by and
stayed out front until the checkered flag fell giving him his second victory in
a row. For the entire race there was a heck of a battle going on behind Ray
between four cars for second place. Tony VonDresky took the spot with Bob
Dominacki third, Timmy Current fourth and first heat winner, Andy Cook fifth.
Second IMCA Late Model heat winner, Brian Meiners grabbed the lead of the
feature, relinquished it to Dustin Edwards on the second lap. Edwards had things
in control until lap twelve when the caution started flying. The first caution
flew as Jon Merfeld and Mark Preston got together and had to resartfin the rear.
On the second restart Edwards spun sending him to the rear. On the third restart
a four car pileup sent three cars to the pits unable to continue. Finally the
next lap got scored and first heat winner, Terry Neal was out front. Neal went
on for his fourth trip to victory lane this year, as Meiners held on for second.
Hershel Roberts was third with Mark Preston coming back up to take fourth. Mike
Guldenpfennig was fifth, after rolling his car the night before at Davenport
Speedway.
