Mark Preston Gets His First Ever IMCA Late Model Feature Win
by Ed Potter
MAQUOKETA, IA. (July 22, 2006) - After a brief shower just a short time before gates opening at Jackson County Speedway Saturday afternoon Bob Wegener put in the effort to be able to put on the racing program, and it was a very good program as not only Mark Preston got his first Jackson County win, but four other drivers got to victory lane for the first time this year. The IMCA Late Model feature had some problems getting going as the caution flew four times in the first three laps, but when it did Adam Oppendike was the leader of the twenty-two car field. On a fifth lap restart Mark Preston shot to the front with Terry Neal in tow. Neal took over the point on lap seventeen and was soon getting into lap traffic. Preston was not about to give up and stayed right with Neal On the last lap going through turns three and four they ran up behind four more cars to lap and Preston picked the right line to take the last lap win. In his year and a half of Late Model racing it was Preston's first win. Neal was second with Brian Meiners third, Ron Gustaf fourth and Hershel Roberts fifth. Neal, Roberts and Cory Goldbeck won the heats.
Another new Jackson County winner came as second heat winner and pole position starter Joe Zrostlik led the 4 Stock feature flag to flag to take the victory. First heat winner, Dustin Kay was second followed by Brannon Bechen, point leader Dan Mohr and Rob Harding, in that order.
Trophy Truck action saw a familiar face take the win as heat winner, Joe Bonney took the lead of the feature from Ethan Milder on lap six and went on for his fifth win of the year. Milder held on for second with Alan Staskal fhird and Bruce Yoerger fourth.
Pole sitter, Brett Miller grabbed the early lead of the Hobby Stock feaure but a seventh lap caution got him, as on the restart Steve Harms shot by and went on for his sixth win of the season. In a last lap move Don Marcov Sr. moved in to take second with Matt Wilson coming across the line third. In post race inspection Wilson was found illegal and disqualified moving Kevin Brame up to third. Ryan Steffen was fourth with Sheldon Hunter taking fifth. Bryan Klein and Harms were the heat winners.
Veteran Dave Bielenberg took the early lead of the B Modified feature, but a fourth lap caution got to him. On the restart Brandon Vorbeck went to the point and stayed there the rest of the way to take his first feature win of the year.Vorbeck was followed across the line by Rick Galloway, B.J. Jackson, Jay Garvey and Jarrett Franzen, in that order. the heat wins went to Shawn Flagel and Keith Feller.
Another racer to use his feature pole starting position wisely was Street Stock second heat winner, Brendan Driscoll as he led flag to flag to take his first feature win of the season. First heat winner and point leader, Andrew Chelf moved in to take second on lap ten of this twelve lapper. Luke Miller took third with Corey Booth coming home fourth and Jon Poll fifth.
Bob Dominacki and Mike Weidemann took thier Stealth chassised cars to heat
race wins and then Weidemann led the V8 Modified feature flag to flag for his
fist win of this season. The only thing was the last flag was a caution as the
race was called over after ten laps due to time and the number of cautions. But
it was good for Weidemann as he got the win. Luke Pestka was second with Marty
Diercks third eighteenth place starter Corey Dripps fourth and Don Pataska
fifth. If all the cars would have shown up on time there would have been two
more classes with three qualifying heat races.
