ELLIOTT CLAIMS 12TH ANNUAL HARRIS AUTO RACING NIGHT OF 1000
STARS
By Emily Hiscocks
BRITT, IA (July 25, 2006) - It was a night to remember at the Pritchard Family
Auto Stores Hancock County Speedway Tuesday night. Not only did the Modifieds
show up on this special Harris Auto Racing Night of 1000 Stars, but the three
other classes of racing were all fighting for the spotlight too.
With $500 up for grabs, the USRA Hobby Stock 23-car feature made sure the fans
had something to see. Trent Murphy of Jefferson made the trip in his #25x to
battle for the winnings. Jefferson jumped out into the lead. Luke Wanninger,
also from Jefferson, gave him a good battle for the lead. In the meantime, Randy
Hadacek was looking to move up to the front and continue his winning ways as he
battled Chris Monson for the third spot.
The first half of the race was somewhat calm. After a collision in turn 1,
Hadacek was able to overtake Monson and Wanninger for the second spot. The
hometown racer was up to battle Murphy. With just two laps to go, Murphy fell
off the pace and Hadacek was able to take the checkered. Coincidentally, this
was Hadacek’s second victory in four days at the Britt speedplant.
After a six-car B Main for the Modifieds, the USRA Stock Cars were next on
stage. A $700 prize made the drivers’ eyes a bit larger than they should have
been on Friday night. Going three- and four-wide into the corners caused some
good battles and some collisions all in the same. Starting on the pole, the #42
of Jeff Nielsen jumped out to a quick lead. A collision in turns 3-4 gave the
#44k of Kevin Opheim and the #21 of Travis Hoeft a chance to take over the
battle for the lead spot. The two drivers pulled away from the field of 13 cars
to what seemed to be a for sure first and second place finish. A bobble in turn
1 by Opheim gave Hoeft the lead until he did his own in turn 3.
Opheim was sure to have the victory in wraps until some debris on the track
caused the yellow flag to fly. The drivers in the front were anxious to get
their hands on the trophy. On the second failed restart, Opheim had to leave the
track because of a flat tire. In the meantime, the #17c of Cory Oftedahl had car
problems, taking him out of the race. It was determined that Hoeft was to blame
for the bad starts. He was sent to the back and then pit side. With three of the
top four cars out, Chad Palmer and Nielsen battled side-by-side for the final
laps. At the all-telling yellow pole, Palmer was able to edge Nielsen for the
victory. One noteworthy performance was by the #7III of Ryan Hiscocks. After
starting dead last, he was able to keep his nose clean and finish in the third
spot, after passing the #99n of Rodney Necker at the finish line.
As if it couldn’t get any more exciting, the USRA B-Modifieds were ready to
strut their stuff. J.J. Wise got the racing started from the front row. Wise was
beginning to pull away when the yellow flag flew. It took three cautions for the
#0 of Jamie Anderson to get a good start and pass the #68 of Wise. Another
caution brought the two drivers back together for a side-by-side battle. It
wasn’t until Wise suffered a flat tire that Anderson pulled back into the lead.
The #25 of Doug Cook was up to challenge Anderson. For four laps the drivers
battled. Anderson bobbled giving Cook a short lead. Unfortunately, Cook came
across some bad luck which allowed the driver from Mason City to take the top
spot back. With just two laps to go, the #1m of Doug McCollough made his way to
the front. In a battle that got the fans up once again, the McCollough was able
to pass Anderson in the final turn. McCollough endured a last-place start and a
collision with two other cars en route to the checkered flag.
In what was to be the main show of the night, 27 Modifieds made their way onto
the track. A 30-lap race for $2,000 and more than $1,500 in lap money was sure
to provide some excitement. The drivers were a bit anxious as Toby Boothroyd
signaled a bad start and aligned the cars for a restart. The #12 of Mark Elliott
took advantage of his second starting position to pull away from the pack on the
restart. Behind him, fans witnessed several laps of racers taking the corners
three- and four-wide. Kelly Shryock was on the move from his eighth starting
spot. In just two laps, he made it up to the second spot.
After three cautions, Elliott was holding a lead over Shryock and three-time
Harris Auto Racing Night of 1000 Stars champion Al Hejna. Shryock made his way
up to battle with Elliott. The #75 red ride of Shryock (normally driven by Denny
Rosenburg) was about to take the lead as the yellow flag was thrown for a turned
car in the corner. In the meantime, Shryock left the track because of a broken
gasket. This left Elliott and Hejna to do battle for the lead. After another
caution, Hejna got a good jump on Elliott and was able to jump ahead. A
back-and-forth battle proved to be a bit too much for Hejna as Elliott took his
position back. It was a battle of a Harris vs. Skyrocket Chassis. In this case,
Elliot drove his Harris past the yellow pole first for the $2,000 prize.
If you missed the great event on Tuesday night, be sure to attend Fan
Appreciation Night this coming Friday, July 28. The cost is just $5 for
everybody 12 and older. Kids under 12 get in for FREE. In addition, the winner
of the class of cars with the most entries will capture a $1,000 prize.
