Ryan Duhme Picks Off His First Ever IMCA Late Model Feature
Win
by: Ed Potter
MAQUOKETA, IA. (Aug. 12, 2006) - Saturday evening was a beautiful night for
racing at Jackson County Speedway if you stayed on the track and didn't go over
the bank in a few places as there were a few large water holes out there, as a
few drivers found out. IMCA Late Model feature front row starter, Bob Miller led
the first lap with Brian Meiners taking over on lap two. The races first of only
two cautions flew at this time and on the restart home town favorite, young Ryan
Duhme charged to the front. Duhme pulled about a five car length lead until the
last caution flew at lap seven. Duhme held on to his lead on the restart but the
field was tightly packed up behind him. Lap nine saw Jeremiah Hurst move into
second, but he couldn't hold it long as Mark Preston charged by him three laps
later. Second heat winner, Kevin Blum moved into third on lap fourteen, but
neither Preston or Blum could catch Duhme. In a borrowed car last place starter,
Terry Neal joined the top three on lap seventeen and second became a three car
race with Duhme still leading. In turns three and four on the very last lap a
car about to be lapped got sideways in front of Duhme but he got by and went on
for his first ever IMCA Late Model vicory. With the lapped car involved Neal
took second by inches over Preston's third. Blum held on for fourth with Hurst
taking fifth. Jason Bahrs won the other heat, but had his problems in the
feature.
Twenty-four cars were scheduled to start the 4 Stock feature and all twenty-four made the call. Pole sitter, Denise Costello led the first lap when the first caution flew for a three car pile up in turn four. On the restart Justin Kay took over the point and it soon became a brother act after the next caution at lap four. On the restart Justin stayed out front but now had third heat winner, and his brother Dustin in tow. After a couple more cautions one lap later things stayed pretty much the same until lap seven when Dustin moved out front. On lap eight Greg Schmitt coasted into the infield bringing out the last caution as he had a fire under the hood. At the same time on the track Justin Neuman was losing his fuel tank. After a short break to burn the fuel off the track Justin went back to the front on the restart. As the brothers ran side by side for the last lap Dustin took the win on a last lap charge coming off turn four. Justin was second by inches with first heat winner, Dan Mohr taking third. Harry Rogers was fourth with second heat winner, Brannon Bechen fifth.
After winning the Trophy Truck heat race Alan Staskal came back to win his sixth feature of the year. Ethan Milder was second, Bruce Yoerger third and Joe Bonney fourth.
Tim Bader led the first lap of the Hobby Stock feature with first heat winner, Corey Rupp taking over on lap two. Rupp held on the rest of the way to take his second victory of the season. Steve Hamrs was second with tenth place starter, Wayne Hora third. Sheldon Hunter was fourth and second heat winner, Kevin Brame rounded out the top five.
B Modified second heat winner, Ben Traver took the lead from Mike Fuller on
the second lap of the feature and pretty much had things his way holding off the
challenges of Jarrett Franzen. On lap eight Keith Feller moved into second and
was soon putting real pressure on Traver. As the two ran side by side Feller
even edged out front to lead lap nine but Traver came back on ten, and continued
to hold Feller off the rest of the way in a close win at the line Traver took
his first win of the year at Jackson County. Feller was second with first heat
winner, Jarrett Franzen holding on for third. Tom Pestka and Matt Irwin rounded
out the top five.
Robert Sherbonda led the first lap of the Street Stock feature and then the
race's only caution flew. On the restart second heat winner, Brendan Driscoll
took over the point until lap four when first heat winner, Shane Oberbreckling
took over. On lap nine Klay Letcher, who had been running in the top three since
the start went to the front and on for his first win this year. Oberbreckling
hels on for second with Driscoll third, Brian Bonney fourth and Josh Wilson
fifth.
Pole sitter, Hal Sprague led the first lap of the V8 Modified feature,. but
once again a caution flew right away. The caution flew one more time before the
second lap was scored and that was the last caution of the race. On the restart
Mike Weidemann grabbed the lead for two laps. Then Timmy Current charged out
front and never looked back. Current went on for his first win of the season at
Jackson County Speedway. Kelly Pestka took second with Weidemann holding on for
third. Bob Dominacki took fourth on the last lap over Marty Diercks's fifth. Don
Pataska, Tony VonDresky and Current were the heat winners.
