Year's Largest Field of Cars at Jackson County Speedway as
Hora, Burkhead and Toland Take First Wins
by Ed Potter
MAQUOKETA, IA (Aug. 19, 2006) - It was a beautiful evening for racing at Jackson
County Speedway Saturday and apparently a lot of racers thought so to. One
Hundred and fourty-four cars crammed the pit area and half way around the horse
track. There were enough 4 Stock cars that the field was divided into two
features with both paying the same purse and same points as on a regular
feature. The Midwest Jalopies and the IIMLA Modified Lights also made visits to
the track. Dustin Kay came from his fourth place starting spot to take the lead
of the first 4 Stock feature but his brother Justin went by on lap seven. Justin
held on for his third win of the seson with Dustin in a close second. Second
heat winner, Harry Rogers was third with Tom Lamey fourth and Mike Morrow fifth.
Third heat winner, Brannon Bechen led the other feature flag to flag for his
second win of the year. First heat winner, Joe Zrostlik was second with point
leader, Dan Mohr third. Jeremy Campbell took fourth with hometowner, Kile
Vohringer fifth.
After winning the Trophy Truck heat race Ethan Milder took the early lead of the
feature with Alan Staskal taking over on lap six. Staskal went on for his
seventh win of the season with Bruce Yoerger second and Milder third.
Hobby Stock pole sitter, Dan Kessler led the first lap when a caution flew. On
the restart first heat winner, Wayne Hora book over the point and never looked
back as he led the rest of the way for his first Jackson County win of the year.
The race was called over after lap eleven as Don Marcov Sr and Robin Hute got
together in turn two and both cars rolled . Marcov walked back to the pits but
Robin was taken in for a check-up. Sheldon Hunter was second with Steve Harms
third, second heat winner, Kevin Brame fourth and Jeff Specht fifth.
Mike Fuller grabbed the early lead of the B Modified feature with Mike Baker
taking over on lap three. On lap four the caution flew with Baker retaining the
lead on the restart. At lap six Keith Feller moved out front with Baker and Doug
Burkhead in hot pursuit. On lap ten Burkhead edged out front but the caution
flew before the lap was over for a car sitting in the backstretch. This took the
restart line-up back to the last completed lap wihich put Feller back in front.
On the checkered flag lap it was Burkhead taking the win on his first visit to
the speedway this year. Feller was a close second with Jarrett Franzen coming
from twelth to take third. Baker held on for fourth with Ben Traver taking
fifth. Jay Garvey, Baker and Traver took the heat wins.
Another roll over came in the Street Stock first heat as D.J. Fuller rolled his
car between turns three and four on the first lap of the first heat. Pole
sitter, Robert Sherbonda led the first lap of the feature with Josh Wilson
taking over on a second lap restart. Wilson held off the challenges of Terry
Rittmer and Jon Poll to go on for his second win this year. Rittmer held on for
second with Poll taking third. Shane Oberbreckling was fourth with Corey Booth
fifth.
The V8 Modified feature went flag to flag non-stop with front row starter, Andy
Cook leading flag to flag for his second win of the season. The first half of
the race he had to hold off Scott Olson and the second half of the race it was
Ray Cox Jr putting the pressure on. Cox took a close second with Olson holding
on for third. Donovan Lodge took fourth with Bart Miller fifth. Milo Veloz Jr
and Cox took the heat wins.
Steve Olson led the first lap of the IMCA Late Model feature with first heat
winner, Brian Meiners taking over on lap two. Third heat winner, Ryan Duhme took
over the point on lap three. On lap fourteen second heat winner, Terry Neal
charged to the front and looked to have things pretty much in control. Working
some lap traffic on lap twenty one Neal spun into the infield and came back out
about mid pack. Neal's spin turned the lead over to Rob Toland and Toland took
full advantage as he went on for his first Jackson County Speedway win on his
second visit to the track this year. Duhme was second with Olson holding on for
third. Jeremy Gustaf was fourth with Andy Nezworski taking fifth.
The Midwest Jalopies made a visit to the speedway and had Rodney Haack take the
feature win. Heat winner, Bob Mingst was second followed by Butch Dunn, John
Enwistle and Dan Haack, in that order.
The Iowa-Illinois Modified Lights made their first visit to the speedway and
Erik Close led the feature flag to flag for the win. First heat winner, Kelly
Meyer took second with second heat winner, Jeff Norton third. Rob Guss was
fourth with Legrand Logsdon fifth.
