Wilson takes Weedon Memorial Win
by Mike McGuire

DAVENPORT, IA (May 4, 2007) - Topping a talented field of Modified drivers, Moline's Thad Wilson took home the win in the Weedon Memorial race at the Davenport Speedway, Friday night. The event was completed despite the rather dreary weather conditions and steady sprinkles throughout part of the event.

The event is named for the late Ronnie Weedon, a local racing legend, and sponsored by J&J Camper Sales. Weedon scored over 500 feature wins in a racing career that lasted more than fifty years. Weedon's #00 modified led the parade laps prior to the Modified main.

After starting fourth in the Modified feature, Thad Wilson wasted little time getting by early race leader Doug Crampton. Wilson quickly built up a full straightaway lead over the field and held that gap all the way to the checkers. Crampton would hang on to the second spot with Mike Zemo Jr. third, Bob Dominacki fourth, and Ryan Dolan fifth.

Wilson, Crampton, and John Bull took heat race wins. Chad Patch won the Modified consi.

Terry Neal won his second straight IMCA Late Model feature Friday at Davenport. Neal, who had to qualify through the consi and started 14th, used the high line to rocket his way past the father/son duo of Ron And Eric Gustaf for the lead. Neal cruised on for an easy win, despite several caution flags, which kept tightening the field.

Bobby Toland also used the high side to take second, with Ray Guss Jr. third. Rick Wages and Matt Ryan completed the top five. Ryan, Eric Gustaf, and Bobby Toland won the late model heats. Brian Harris won the consi.

Joe Beal avoided a 3-car wreck early in the street stock feature and used the restart to explode into the lead. Beal would hold the lead all the way to the checkers for his first win at Davenport this year. Brad Tyler raced to a second place finish Henry Carson, Josh Wilson, and Ron Doolittle rounding out the top five. Carson and Kevin Schloemer took the heat race wins.

Kevin Dickey jumped out to the early lead in the B-Mod main, despite a rash of early caution flags. John Ahlers used the high side of the track to get around Dickey a score his first win of the season at Davenport. Dickey held on for second with Bryan Rogers and Chris Zogg were third and fourth respectively. Dickey, Mike Fluegel, and Brad Pershy were heat winners.

Craig Peekenschnieder took the lead of the INEX Legend car feature from Dennis Begyn at the white flag and held on for his first feature win. In a close finish, Matt Montieth was second, with Begyn finishing third and Warren Ropp fourth.

A mid-race caution allowed Bryan Klein to pass Ricky Kay and take the feature in the 4 Cylinder Stocks. Kay was second, with Steven Phillips third.

The next race at the Davenport Speedway will be Wednesday, May 9th, the World of Outlaws Late Model Series visits the quarter-mile oval. This is the only WoO LMS event in Eastern Iowa or Western Illinois this year. V-8 Modifieds will also be racing. Hot laps are set for 6 p.m. and qualifying will follow at 6:30 p.m.
