RACHELS, GREENE TAKE USRA STOCK CAR SHOOTOUT OPENERS
By Tony Paris

OSKALOOSA, Iowa (June 28) -- The first of seven straight nights of racing for the USRA Stock Cars and USRA Hobby Stocks kicked off at the Southern Iowa Speedway in Oskaloosa, Iowa, Wednesday, with the USRA Stock Car Shootout presented by DRS Transport of Oskaloosa, along with Kids Night at the races with all kinds of prizes given away from the DRS team.

This was the first night for the traveling series with USRA Casey's General Stores Weekly Racing Series national points being awarded to all drivers, and Musco Lighting USRA Modified drivers also battling for track points.

The 20-lap feature for the Musco Lighting USRA Modifieds was a thriller with Michael Bennett of Des Moines and Brad Pinkerton of New Sharon swapping the lead nine different times, while Bruce Hanford of Davenport also mixed things up with the three drivers battling for the race lead. Two cautions closed the field up with only two laps remaining. Pinkerton took the lead on the restart and cruised to the checkered flag for his second straight win at the Mahaska County Half-Mile Monster. Bennett took second with Hanford in third and Brandon Banks of Washington if fourth, racing his way from the tail after spinning on lap 2.

The second feature of the night was the USRA Hobby Stocks in action with Danny Thrasher of Agency leading the field to the green. Thrasher looked to have the race under control before a caution flag tightened the field up. On the restart, Bobby Greene of Eddyville snagged the lead and held off several challenges from Nathan Wood of Sigourney to take the win. Wood took second after working his way from the 10th starting spot, with Jared Sanders of New Sharon taking a hard-fought third position. Jason VanZomeren of Oskaloosa recorded his best finish with fourth-place.

In the final feature of the evening, Pat Rachels of Knoxville took home the USRA Stock Car prize money and trophy for his stellar performance. Rachels passed polesitter Eric Flander of Barnes City for the lead and never looked back, working the high side of the racing surface for the win. Flander and defending track champion T.J. Criss of Oskaloosa battled for the second spot, but both drivers fell back as Bobby Greiner Jr. of Ottumwa took the runner-up spot on the restart with only four laps remaining. Colt Mather of Webster followed Greiner to the front and took the third position after starting 10th. Double-duty Pinkerton was fourth.

The next race off the seven day series will be Thursday night at the Pritchard Family Auto Stores Hancock County Speedway in Britt, Iowa, with the USRA Stock Car winner getting $1,000 and the USRA Hobby Stock winner pocketing $400. Hot laps are at 7 p.m. with racing action to follow.

The final two nights of the seven-day USRA Stock Car Shootout will wrap up back here at the Southern Iowa Speedway on Monday and Tuesday, July 3-4.

The Southern Iowa Speedway is located 0.5 mile west of US 63 on SR 92, then 0.3 mile north on N. I St. (at the Southern Iowa Fairgrounds). For more information call the track hotline at (641) 673-7004 or visit www.sispeedway.com  online.
