SHANNON SHERWOOD SCORES
FIRST EVER WIN AT SOUTHERN IOWA SPEEDWAY
By: Tony Paris
OSKALOOSA, IA (July 3, 2006) - Racing returned for night number six of the
seven day stock car and hobby stock traveling series sponsored by Greiner
Buildings of Washington. After five straight nights of racing the winners circle
hadn`t seen a repeat winner coming into night number six. In the eighteen lap
USRA hobby stock feature Kevin Schmauss of Eagle Grove and Bobby Greene of
Eddyville brought the field to the green flag with Greene taking the lead with
Schmauss running second with Chase Mitrisin running third. The battle for the
lead would get very interesting with three drivers battling for the lead with
Green still trying to hold off Shannon Sherwood of Oskaloosa along with Nathan
Wood of Sigourney.
The three drivers would swap the lead with Wood taking the lead on lap six and would try to hold off Greene and Sherwood but there was no holding off the 6S machine of local driver Sherwood who powered past Wood in chase of his first ever win. Sherwood would take the win by seven car lenghts pocketing the $400 and his first ever trophy to add to his racing highlights topping the field of fellow drivers. Wood took second with Greene in third and Mike Shelton of Ottumwa in fourth. This was Shelton`s sixth straight night of racing along with Bill Gibson of Knoxville who also had run all six but had motor problems and finished twelveth.
The second feature of the night was
the USRA stock car main event going twenty-five laps with Matt Greiner of
Washington and Nathan Wood of Sigourney leading the stock car field to the green
and Greiner along with Wood would thrill the crowd for the first twelve laps
with side-by-side racing with the two drivers swapping the lead several times
before Brad Pinkerton of New Sharon closed in for a three car battle with
Piinkerton taking the lead and powered the 17P machine to victory lane for the
$1000 payday and making the sixth diffrent stock car feature winner in six
nights of racing action. The 12J machine of T.J.Criss of Oskaloosa would make
his way from eight to second and closed the gap between his machine and leader
Pinkerton but couldn`t do anything with Pinkerton on the last lap and settled
for second position. Rookie driver Wood took home the third spot with Matt
Greiner taking the fourth spot and veteran driver Steve Jackson of Polk City
taking fifth.
