PINKERTON, WOOD REPEAT WINNERS; VANDERBEEK TAKES STOCK CAR
CHECKERS AT SOUTHERN IOWA SPEEDWAY
By Tony Paris
OSKALOOSA, IA (Aug. 23, 2006) - The USRA Casey's General Stores Weekly Racing
Series was in action for another Wild, Wild Wednesday on Kids Night at the
Southern Iowa Speedway in Oskaloosa, Iowa. All kids 11 and under were admitted
free and had a chance to pick up some candy and cold, hard cash on the front
stretch.
The racing season is quickly coming to an end with next week being the final
night with the Coca-Cola Season Championships. All three classes with the
high-powered Late Models added to Tuesday night's action. Late Model drivers
will be gunning for $2,000 to win. The moving to Tuesday night, Aug. 29, was
announced by promoter Todd Staley to allow drivers to run Tuesday night at Osky
and Wednesday night at the Lee County Speedway in Donnellson.
In the first feature of the night, Brad Pinkerton of New Sharon topped the Musco
Lighting USRA Modified feature, coming from the 10th starting spot and working
the high side of the racing surface to make his passes. Veteran driver Bruce
Hanford of Davenport led the first seven laps before Pinkerton took the lead and
cruised to victory lane. The runner-up spot went to Hanford, who battled hard
with Zack VanderBeek. VanderBeek had trouble in his heat race and damaged the
right side of the car, forcing him to start 16th. But VanderBeek raced his way
to second before mechanical problems ended his run. Mike Hughes of Rose Hill
made his return to the Mahaska County Half-Mile Monster a good one by taking the
third spot, while Barry Sandeman of Creston raced his way from the 11th starting
spot to finish fourth.
The USRA Hobby Stock feature went to Nathan Wood of Sigourney, who raced his way
from the tenth starting spot to the front, taking the lead from Jared Sanders of
New Sharon. Sanders led the first eight laps of the 15-lap main event. The
battle for the second was very exciting with Bobby Greene and Dustin Griffiths
going wheel-to-wheel for several laps before Greene took the runner-up spot.
Greene, however, was disqualified after the event for an illegal carburetor.
This gave Bill Gibson the second spot with Mike Shelton of Ottumwa in third and
Rick Landgrebe of Sigourney taking the fourth spot. The red flag stopped the
action on the second lap after Kirk Brown of Knoxville rolled in turn 2. He was
not hurt.
In the USRA Stock Car feature, Zack VanderBeek worked his way from the sixth
starting spot to take the win. The battle for second was a thriller with Brad
Pinkerton and Brian Mitrisin of Oskaloosa going wheel-to-wheel and door-to-door
for the final seven laps with Pinkerton making the pass with only one lap
remaining. Mitrisin took third and rookie driver Nathan Wood snared the fourth
spot.
Next week's racing action will be on Tuesday night, Aug. 29, with the Coca-Cola
Season Championships for the USRA Casey's General Stores Weekly Racing Series
along with the big-bodied dirt Late Models invading the big half-mile oval with
their earth-pounding horsepower gunning for the $2,000 top prize.
The Southern Iowa Speedway is located 0.5 mile west of US 63 on SR 92, then 0.3
mile north on N. I St. (at the Southern Iowa Fairgrounds). For more information
