OSKALOOSA, Iowa (May 9) - With a packed house for Fan Appreciation Night
presented by Wal-Mart, Doug’s Four-Wheelers and the Southern Iowa Fair Board,
spectators were treated to some of the most exciting action of the year with
side-by-side action and close finishes in both the USRA Stock Car and USRA Hobby
Stock features. All four classes for the USRA Casey’s General Stores Weekly
Racing Series saw new winners in victory lane.
In the USRA B-Mod feature, Paul Underwood of Ottumwa and Nate Caruth of Ames
battled for the checkered flag, with 13-year-old Caruth out-classing the field
for the win. Underwood took the second spot with Bugs Vincent of Nevada in third
and Ronnie Pumphrey of Altoona in fourth.
In the MUSCO Lighting USRA Modified feature, Ron Ver Beek of Oskaloosa made his
second night out with his new Skyrocket Chassis pay off with a feature win. The
second spot went to Zack VanderBeek of New Sharon with Jon Snyder of Ames taking
third and fourth going to Josh Truman of Indianola, who bounced back after
getting his No. 47 machine upside down last week.
The third main event of the night featured the USRA Hobby Stocks with Rick
Landgrebe of Sigourney and Dustin Griffiths of Ottumwa battling for the lead.
Landgrebe took the lead on lap 2 but had to battle three-wide on lap 5 with Bill
Gibson of Knoxville and Jason McDaniel of Eldon. Gibson and McDaniel thrilled
the crowd with the two drivers swapping the lead eight different times before
McDaniel secured the win. Gibson took second after starting 10th with Landgrebe
and Griffiths taking third and fourth, respectively.
The final feature of the night saw the USRA Stock Cars take to the Mahaska
County Half-Mile Monster, and they did not disappoint the crowd. With three- and
sometimes four-wide racing for the lead, it was a thriller. Bobby Greiner Jr. of
Ottumwa and Matt Greiner of Washington brought the cars to the green flag for 18
exciting laps. The two unrelated Greiners battled for the lead with Rick Gustin
of Marshalltown taking the lead on lap 5. Gustin looked to have his No. 62
machine headed to victory lane but traded a little paint with Bobby Greiner and
Colt Mather in turns 1-2. Mather made the pass on lap 16 and led the final two
laps for the win. Zack VanderBeek garnered his second runner-up finish of the
evening, with Bobby Greiner in third and defending USRA Stock Car track champion
Brad Pinkerton taking fourth.
Next Wednesday it's the first of three appearances this season for the
high-powered, full-bodied, lightning-fast USRA Late Models battling for a $3,000
top prize. Also on the card will be a complete program for the USRA Casey’s
General Stores Weekly Racing Series featuring MUSCO Lighting USRA Modifieds,
USRA Stock Cars, USRA B-Mods and USRA Hobby Stocks. Gates open at 5 p.m., with
hot laps at 7:15 and racing to follow.
The Southern Iowa Speedway is located one half-mile west of US 63 on SR 92, then
four blocks north on N. I St. (at the Southern Iowa Fairgrounds). For
