TWO REPEAT WINNERS AND THREE NEW FACES IN VICTORY LANE AT SOUTHERN IOWA SPEEDWAY By: Tony Paris OSKALOOSA, IA (July 16) - The Southern Iowa Speedway featured five classes in action sponsored by local businesses in New Sharon with the Casey’s General Store USRA weekly racing series in action along with the Miller Lite Schwartz Distributing Mid-America 305 sprints in action. The first feature of the night was the USRA hobby stock feature with Andy Coleman of Packwood leading the first six laps before a flat right rear tire ended his run to victory with Coleman’s car slowing on the top of turn three and four Wes Almond was racing on the high side and clipped the car of Coleman’s sending Almonds car upside-down bringing the red flag out stopping the action. When the action resumed Jason McDaniel would lead the final six laps for his second straight win at the monster half-mile. The runner-up spot went to Danny Thrasher of Agency who tried to close in for the win but took second with Shannon Sherwood of Rose Hill in third and Don Nunnikhoven of Kellogg in fourth. In the Karl Chevrolet USRA stock car feature Bobby Green of Eddyville held off several challenges and lead all sixteen laps for the win. Howard Gordon Jr.of Oskaloosa tried several times to take the lead but Greene was to tough with Gordon taking second followed by Corey Stout of Oskaloosa in third and Matt Greiner of Washington in fourth. The Preacher feature saw four guys try there luck in borrowed equipment and Phil Campbell of Douds took the feature win. Phil is the pastor of the Bethel Worship Church in Douds and he use to race over thirty years ago. The Mid-America 305 Sprint Car feature went to fifteen year old up a coming star Tasker Phillips of Pleasantville who lead all fifteen laps to take the win. Phillips held off several challenges from Omaha, Ne. driver Matt Stelzer who tried several time to make the pass on the bottom side of the speedway but took the second spot with Chad Huston of Jamesport, Mo. Taking the third spot and Louis Lynch of Glenwood, Mo. Finish fourth helping to add to his point lead with a another good and consistent finish. The fourth feature was the Carter International and Karl Chevrolet USRA b-modified feature Leroy Groenindyk of Oskaloosa leading the first five laps before the red flag would fly for Leroy’s son Tyler rolling his 17T machine in turn four after making contact with the inside tire barrier. On the restart Andrew Schroeder of Keswick and Brian Edel of Oskaloosa would battle for the lead making a three car battle with Edel powering his machine into the lead and hold off Schroeder for the win. This was Edel’s second straight win and moved him into the point lead. Schroeder took second with Leroy Groenindyk in third and Mike Shelton of Bloomfield in fourth. In the Musco Lighting USRA a-modifieds Zack Vanderbeek had the Casey’s
General Store skyrock and Chester Cheeto 33z flying around the track leading
all sixteen laps with Colt Mather of Webster in second with Ron Verbeek of
Oskaloosa in third and Scott Dickey of Packwood in fourth. |
