WOOD TAKES TWO WITH GROENENDYK TAKING FIRST EVER AND HUGHES
TAKING FIRST EVER AT SOUTHERN IOWA SPEEDWAY
By: Tony Paris
OSKALOOSA, IA (May 19) - Racing action at the Southern Iowa Speedway was
held on Tuesday night with the three USRA weekly racing classes in action
and the first visit of the Casey’s General Stores United States Modified
Touring series making it’s first stop and first race of the central region
with forty-one high powered open wheeled road warriors ready for action.
The first feature was the Carter International USRA B-modifieds in action
with Tyler Groenendyk of Oskaloosa showing his father how to get the job
done and powered his new 17t machine to victory lane. Father Leroy finishing
second with but was later disqualified for improper carburetor. This moved
everyone up one spot with rookie driver Drew Lawson of Oskaloosa taking the
second spot and Cory Brown of Ottumwa in the third spot. The battle for
fourth went to Andrew Schroeder of Keswick who passed Bryon Weyer of Des
Moines for the fourth spot.
In the Karl Chevrolet USRA stock car division thrilled the crowd with three
wide racing action for the top spots. Nathan Wood of Keswick along with Kyle
Harwood of Oskaloosa and Brian Mitrisin of Oskaloosa mixing it up for the
win. Harwood would lead the first five laps before Wood made the pass on the
bottom of the track. Wood would hold off a late race challenge from Brian
Mitrisin who closed in on the rear bumper but just came up short by two car
length. Mitrisin took the second spot with Zack Vanderbeek of New Sharon
taking the third spot after starting eight after winning last weeks feature
event.
The USRA hobby stocks feature twenty drivers tried there luck on the big
half-mile going fifteen laps with only one caution with Nathan Wood of
Keswick taking his second win of the night. Wood held off last week’s winner
Bobby Greene of Eddyville who raced his way from the tenth starting spot to
be the bridesmaid. The third spot went to Chris Hovden of Cresco who made
the three hour pull from northeast Iowa to southeastern part of Iowa. Kris
Walker of Oskaloosa taking the fourth spot after making the pass on Dale
Porter of Pulaski.
To cap the night off fans go to see some of the best drivers in the United
States with the Casey’s General Stores USMTS modifieds taking t the track
for the $2000 payday for thirty laps of action. The flatlander from
Watertown, South Dakota John Tesch lead the field with Jason Hughes of
Westville, Oklahoma running second. The first of two cautions would fly on
lap seven and eight for Ron Verbeek of Oskaloosa spinning in turn four and
the following lap caution would fly for debris in turn four also. The next
twenty-two laps would go green to checker with Tesch and Hughes running
first and second. The two drivers would work into lap traffic with five laps
remaining with Hughes closing the gap and Tesch would make contact with the
turn one fence causing damage to the rear spoiler. This allowed Hughes to
make the pass on Tesch and finally get the monkey off his back at the
Southern Iowa Speedway and took his first ever win and pocketed the $2000
payday for his efforts. Tesch came home in the second spot with Ryan Gustin
of Marshalltown in third and last years two time winner Brad Pinkerton of
New Sharon in fourth. The 33Z machine of Zack Vanderbeek powered his machine
to a fifth place finish after starting twelfth. The two NASCAR stars Kenny
Schrader and Kenny Wallace would take home a thirteenth place finish for
Schrader and Wallace would have some mechanical problems that would force
him into the b-main event and missed it by two spots of making the feature
event.
Things will fire back up at the Southern Iowa Speedway and get back on track
next Wednesday night with all four of the USRA sanctioned divisions in
action with hot laps at 7:15Pm and racing action scheduled for 7:30PM
