OSKALOOSA, IOWA (July 1) - Springfield, Missouri late model driver Jeremy Payne grabbed the lead at the drop of the green flag then set sail as he won the opening night of the Mars three day weekend spectacular here at the Southern Iowa Speedway wining the thirty lap $3,000 to win special leading flag to flag. Payne the team mate to five time Mars series champion Terry Phillips was never headed as the lone caution fell on lap seventeen for Chris Simpson for a flat tire bunching the field up for a restart. Paynes hot rod was performing to perfection as he broke away winning by ease. Terry Phillips who started fifth placed second, Chad Simpson who started third finished third, Al Purkey was fourth, with Jason Utter coming home fifth. Denny Eckrich finished sixth, Andy Eckrich was seventh, Andrew McKay eighth, Kurt Kile ninth and Rookie point leader sixteen year old Gary Christian tenth after starting eighteenth. In the preliminaries Jeremy Payne had a perfect night winning the first heat over Denny Eckrich, Kurt Kile, Kevin Kile and Jason O'Brien. The second heat was Al Purkey over Terry Phillips, Dave Eckrich, Andy Eckrich, and Nick Marolf. The third heat was Chad Simpson over Andrew McKay Jason Utter, Bryan Goldsmith, and Zack Van Der Beek. The B-Main saw Rob Moss lead the ten lapper from flag to flag ahead of Gary Christian, Kurt Schroedere, and Leroy Johnson Jr.Twenty five late models were on hand as the series now shifts to 1-80 speedway in Greenwood, Nebraska for a Friday contest, and Adams County Speedway in Corning, Iowa for a Saturday contest..
