Curtin, Gibson, Brown top opening night at 24th Annual Musco Lighting Fall
Challenge presented by Budweiser
OSKALOOSA, Iowa (Oct. 8)
– In stark contrast to last year’s event when snowfall fell on the Southern
Iowa Speedway, bright sunny skies and temperatures in the mid-80s greeted
more than 170 drivers and their machines as they made the trek to Oskaloosa,
Iowa, on Friday for opening night of the 24th Annual Musco Lighting Fall
Challenge presented by Budweiser.
The action was fast-paced and
action-packed throughout the program which featured a $1,000 top prize for
each of the four competing classes.
Michael Grantham and
Knoxville’s Bill Gibson paced the Carter’s Manufacturing USRA B-Mod feature
to the green flag.
Gibson led the first three
laps until the caution waved for a stalled car in turns 1-2.
On the restart, former track
champion Brett Moffit shot underneath Gibson to battle for the lead, but
Gibson powered back around the outside.
The second caution of the
event waved just one lap later and the field stacked up behind Gibson in
double-file formation.
Andrew Schroeder took note of
Moffitt’s move on the previous restart and dove to the bottom of the race
track to challenge for the top spot while eighth-place starter Jason
Schlangen powered into the fourth sport, tailing a leader's breakaway from
the three- and four-wide racing taking place behind them.
On the white flag lap, a
stalled car on the front stretch resulted in a yellow flag to bring about a
checkered finish as Gibson withstood the challenges to take the win.
Moffitt and Schroeder also
earned podium finishes as Scott Davis and Schlangen rounded out the top-5.
Polesitter Zack VanderBeek of
New Sharon dominated all 25 laps of the Musco USRA Modified feature event.
The ‘Z-Man’ stretched his lead
to nearly five car-lengths on second place Ron Ver Beek after just one
completed lap, and then approached lapped traffic by the fifth circuit
before a caution on lap 9 bunched the field for a double-file restart.
VanderBeek quickly rebuilt his
advantage as Ver Beek fell back fourth on the restart but battled his way
back to regain the runner-up spot after two more laps.
Despite on more caution with
seven laps remaining, VanderBeek dominated the remaining circuits on his way
to a $1,000 preliminary feature victory.
Kevin Blackburn grabbed
third-place money behind Ver Beek, with nine-time USMTS National Champion
Kelly Shryock finishing fourth and Ryan Peckham scoring the fifth spot.
The USRA Hobby Stock main
event belonged to Craig Brown of Eldon. Fifth-starting and defending ‘Fall
Challenge’ winner Chris Hovden finished second, followed by Shane Klaassen.
Todd Reitzler rallied from tenth to finish fourth, with Danny Thrasher
picking up 13 spots to grab fifth.
Cresco’s Shay Curtain fought
off aggressive challenges from reigning track champion Nathan Wood and
veteran Steve Jackson to pick up the victory in the caution-plagued USRA
Karl Chevrolet Stock Car feature event.
The red flag was displayed
three times during the shortened 18-lap feature, the worst of those
involving Kevin Donlan who walked away uninjured after a violent flip down
the front-stretch.
Todd Inman and Matt Greiner
rounded out the top-5.
The “Mahaska County Monster”
comes alive again on Saturday for Round 2 of the 24th Annual Musco Lighting
Fall Challenge presented by Budweiser and the season finale at the Osky
speedplant.
While each of Friday night’s
four winners pocketed $1,000, drivers will double their pleasure on Saturday
with $2,000 earmarked for the winner of Saturday night’s four main events.
National points will be
awarded in the American Racer USRA Weekly Racing Series, but a USRA license
is not required to compete in this event. Pit gates will open at 1:00 with
grandstands opening at 2:00. Hot laps are slated for 5:00 and the first
green flag waves at 5:30.
Adult grandstand tickets are
only $15, with kids ages 6 to 12 getting in for $5. Children under 6 are
always admitted free of charge at the Southern Iowa Speedway. Pit passes are
$30.
All seats are general
admission, so fans are encouraged to get there early to avoid lines and get
the best seat in the house. Camping sites with hook-ups are available at the
Southern Iowa Fairgrounds.

class): 1. $2000, 2. $1200, 3. $700, 4. $500, 5. $400, 6. $300, 7. $250, 8.
$200, 9. $180, 10. $160, 11. $150, 12. $130, 13. $125, 14. $125, 15–24.

Any driver racing in two
classes must buy two pit passes. Late Model and/or Modified drivers may
compete in the Stock Car class, but will not be allowed to race B-Mods or
Hobby Stocks.
Defending Musco Lighting Fall
Challenge champions are Brad Pinkerton (Musco USRA Modifieds), Shane Weller
(USRA Karl Chevrolet Stock Cars), A.J. Johnson (Carter’s Manufacturing USRA
B-Mods) and Chris Hovden (USRA Hobby Stocks).
The Southern Iowa Speedway is
a half-mile semi-banked clay oval located 0.5 mile west of US 63 on SR 92,
