Burgtorf, Foster, Hatfield and Morgan Score Quincy Checkers
By Jack Walbring
QUINCY, Il. (May 21, 2006) - A beautiful spring day turned sour at Quincy
Raceways during hot laps as the sky opened up and brought a steady rain for
about twenty minutes. The track crew went to work with two graders and with the
help of almost all of the Budweiser IMCA Late Models got the track back into
racing shape in under an hour. Quincy Raceways would like to thank all the
drivers that helped iron in the track as without their help, race action would
have never gotten started.
Mark Burgtorf up his second points feature win and his fourth Budweiser IMCA
Late Model feature win in a row in the thirty lap main event. Burgtorf had his
hands full throughout the main event as he had to come from his third row
starting spot to battle with Tom Darbyshire and Boone McLaughlin as they held
the top two spots over the opening laps of the thirty lapper. Burgtorf got by
Darbyshire on the ninth circuit for second and set his sights on McLaughlin for
the top spot. Burgtorf worked on McLaughlin over the next seven laps but the
battle for the top spot stopped several times as the caution flag slowed the
event. Burgtorf finally got by McLaughlin on the sixteenth lap but he could not
pull away as McLaughlin battled to stay with the multitime champion. McLaughlin
pulled even with Burgtorf on several laps but was never able to regain the lead
and had to settle for a close second as the checkered flag fell. Darbshire kept
McLaughlin and Burgtorf within striking distance but had to settle for third
with Brian Kenning taking fourth and Lonnie Bailey scoring fifth. Joey Gower,
Bailey and Kenning were the heat race winners. Gower also took the win in the
Summy Tire and Auto Center Trophy Dash.
Josh Foster took his second feature win in the Miller Lite IMCA Modified
division and made it look fairly easy after he got to the lead on the seventh
lap. Foster gained a straightaway lead by the end of the twenty five lap main
event and won over David Wietholder in second, Henry Delonjay in third, Robbie
Reed in fourth and Joe Bliven in fifth. Bliven, Wietholder and Delonjay we the
heat race winners with Bliven taking the victory in the P&S Auto and Truck
Collision Repair Trophy Dash.
Bruce Hatfield pulled into the lead of the Bomber main event on the fourth lap
of the twenty lapper and put on a great show in racing to the feature event win.
Eddie Dieker tried every way he could, going high then low then back high again
to no avail as Hatfield held the lead even through four late race restarts.
Dieker settled for the third spot after sliding high in turn four on the white
flag lap letting Steve Carlin by for second. Todd Reichert and Travis Booher
rounded out the top five spots. Kale Foster, Jarrod Richie and Hatfield were the
heat race winners.
Darren Morgan and Sarah Woodhurst put on quite the battle in the Hornet feature
event as the two exchanged the lead several times on the way to the checkered
flag. Questions arose on both Morgan’s and Woodhurst’s mounts in the tech area
after the race with Morgan’s car being ruled legal and Woodhurst being DQ’d. The
DQ moved Steven Delonjay into the second spot followed by James Leffew, Jake
Powers and Levi Long rounding out the top five spots. Leffew and Woodhurst were
the heat race winners.
