Reed Stops Burgtorf’s Streak at Four at Quincy Raceways
By Jack Walbring
QUINCY, Il. (May 28, 2006) - Dustin Reed, Henry Delonjay, Adam Birck and Joel
Kerr all grabbed feature event wins in Memorial Sunday action at Quincy
Raceways.
Ron Elbe jumped into the early lead of the Budweiser IMCA Late Model feature
event with Robbie Warner in hot pursuit. Warner kept the pressure on Elbe until
a eleventh lap caution flag brought the field together for a restart where Jamie
Wilson slipped past Warner for second. Wilson set his sights on Elbe and
challenged for the lead over the next six laps as Dustin Reed was closing into
the third spot. Lap seventeen saw Reed battle past Wilson into second then past
Elbe for the lead the next lap. Mark Burgtorf also charged past both Elbe and
Wilson for second on lap eighteen but Wilson rallied back into second the next
lap. Wilson held off Burgtorf for the next few laps as Reed charged through the
back of the field until Burgtorf finnaly disposed of Wilson on lap twenty three.
That pass setup one of the best battles ever seen at Quincy Raceways as Burgtorf
and Reed battled furiously for the lead over the final seven circuits of the 30
lapper. Reed would hold onto a slight advantage every lap with Burgtorf trying
all the moves he could muster to get by for the lead. Reed showed he has learned
a his lessons well as the nineteen year old would finally win out at the
checkered flag by a close margin with Burgorf settling for second. Tom
Darbyshire grabbed third as Jamie Wilson held onto fourth and Robbie Warner
getting the fifth spot. Kevin Tomlinson, Darbyshire and Warner were the heat
race winners while Darbyshire grabbed the hardware in the Summy Tire and Auto
Center Trophy Dash.
The Miller Lite Modified feature event would be a wild and wooly event as the
caution flag waved way to many times setting up a time limited nine lap affair.
Terry Houston looked like he had a handle on the lead of the event through the
first three laps and five cautions but his engine stopped on the restart of the
sixth caution on lap three giving the lead over to Josh Foster. Foster would
maintain the lead throughout the rest of the event and four more cautions until
the white flag fell. Foster would loose the handle in turn two and spin in front
of the field giving the lead to second place runner Henry Delonjay. Delonjay
would maintain the lead on the restart and would lead to the checkered flag
taking his second win of the season. Jim Powell would put on the drive of his
career and grab a very well deserved second place finish over David Weitholder
in third, Bill Parks in fourth and Shawn Deering in fifth. Danny Lake, Tony
Dunker and Weitholder were the heat race winners with Jeff Waterman taking the
win in the P&S Auto and Truck Collision Repair Trophy Dash.
Adam Birck took the lead away from Steve Watkins Jr. on the thirteenth lap of
the twenty lap bomber feature event and never look back to take his second
feature win of the season in the bomber division. Watkins held off Travis Booher
for second with Booher in third, Jarrod Richie grabbed fourth and Steve Carlin
fifth. Birck, Booher and Carlin also scored the heat race victories.
Joel Kerr made up for all his problems in the early season as he dominated the
fifthteen lap Hornet feature event. Kerr led from green to checkered as he held
off a persistant Steven Delonjay for the checkered flag. Delonjay settled for
second followed by Sarah Woodhurst in third, Levi Long in fourth and Jake Powers
in fifth. Levi Long and James Leffew were the heat race winners.
