Erb Grabs NALMS Cash at Quincy Raceways
By Jack Walbring
QUINCY, ILL (Aug. 3, 2006) - Dennis Erb may have won the $2500 to win 30 lap
main event for the Northern All Star Late Model Feature Event but he had to have
some good luck on his side to do it. Rodney Melvin used his outside front row
starting spot to grab the lead at the drop of the green flag and held onto it
for the first two laps but Erb blasted past to take over the top spot on lap
three and pulled to a considerable lead until a caution flag flew on lap eleven
for Russ Adams who had spun off turn four. Erb led Melvin, Steve Sheppard Jr.,
Frank Heckencast Jr., Randy Korte and Mark Burgtorf on the restart and
maintained his advantage over the field but the race was about to get closer as
Mark Burgtorf found the high line to his liking as he passed Korte, Heckencast
and Sheppard on lap twelve to get into third behind Erb and Melvin. Melvin,
Burgtorf and Korte then put on quite a show as the three battled tooth and nail
on Erb’s rear bumper challenging for the lead and exchanging positions on almost
every lap. Erb maintained his lead as the checkered flag fell but this is where
his good luck appeared as Erb’s right rear tire went flat while taking the
checkered flag, Erb had to be towed to victory lane as the panhard bar also
broke. Melvin managed to wrestle the second spot from Burgtorf and Korte with
Korte grabbing third, Burgtorf fourth and Rusty Schlenk in fifth. Schlenk,
Melvin and Erb were the heat race winners with Terry Babb taking the checkered
flag in the B-Main.
Henry DeLonjay squeaked out a narrow victory in the IMCA Modified feature event
over Brandon Lennox. Lennox challenged DeLonjay over the last few laps even
pulling even at the white flag. DeLonjay pulled to a small advantage going to
the checkered flag as Lennox slid high grazing the front stretch wall while
taking the white flag. Lennox settled for second with Robbie Reed in third, Joe
Bliven in fourth and Shawn Deering in fifth. Lennox took the heat race win.
Adam Birck claimed another special event win in the Bomber division as he took
home the $300 check for the second time this season. Todd Reichert had a good
run to the second spot followed by Brian Clark in third, Rich Uppinghouse in
fourth and Travis Booher in fifth. Aaron Brocksieck was the heat race winner.
