Burgtorf Bag Quincy Raceways Deery Brothers Victory
By Jack Walbring
QUINCY, ILL. (Sept. 3, 2006) - Mother Nature was up to her old tricks Sunday
night at Quincy Raceways but with the valiant efforts of the track crew and
racers, all the scheduled racing events were completed. The sky opened up to a
light rain that last lasted for about a half hour just as the second of the
B-Main events was taking to the track for the IMCA Late Models. Track owner Bob
Scott brought out the tractor and disk and opened up the wet slick track and
then the crew packed it in followed by the road graders taking the slime off to
make the quarter mile a lighting fast race track for the rest of the evenings
events.
Jerry Weisenberger jumped out to the lead of the forty lap main event for the
Deery Brothers IMCA Late Models and looked like he would have the event well
under control after opening up a full straight lead after the first ten laps but
the veteran Quincy driver then encountered slower traffic that were racing side
by side for their own positions. Weisenberger pulled into the race with the back
markers and came out of the worse for wear on lap twelve as contact flattened
his left rear giving the lead over to Greg Kastli. Kastli then worked his way
through the back markers followed closely by Mark Burgtorf. Burgtorf hounded
Kastli until the opening he was waiting for allowed him to blast past to take
the lead on the twenty seventh lap. Burgtorf then pulled out to a comfortable
lead until the checkered flag fell on lap forty. Ron Gustaf held on to the
second spot for the last ten laps but Rob Toland snuck by to take the spot on
the last lap followed by Gustaf in second, Brian Kenning in fourth and Kastli in
fifth. Toland’s second place finish now give him a small unofficial four point
advantage over Jeff Aikey in the points battle for the Deery Brothers Series
crown with three events to still be ran. Toland, Matt Bailey, Weisenberger,
Kastli and Gustaf were the heat race winners while Joey Gower and Terry
Schlipman won the B-Main events. Gary Webb was uninjured in a heat race incident
that set the veteran on his roof after contact with a couple of cars that were
involved in an accident. Webb was able to start his B-Main event but retired
after a few laps of competition.
Robbie Reed sealed up the Track Points Championship with his third place finish
in the Miller Lite IMCA Modifieds. Brandon Lennox won a battle with Henry
DeLonjay in the twenty lap main event after several early race caution flags
slowed the event. DeLonjay settled for second but it was not enough to hold Reed
off for the championship battle. Brandon Savage gathered up fourth followed by
Kendall Groves in fifth. Reed, DeLonjay and Lennox were the heat race winners
with Reed capping of his points championship by winning the P&S Auto and Truck
Collision Repair Trophy Dash.
Corrie Eifert took his first ever Quincy Raceways Bomber division feature event
win in a very wild and wooly twenty lap main event. Steve Carlin grabbed second
followed by Travis Booher in third, Adam Birck in fourth and Dusty Bingaman in
fifth. Jeremy Buss, Eifert and Aaron Brocksieck were the heat race winners.
Carlin opened up his points lead to twelve over Birck with one event remaining
for the Bombers.
James Leffew tried to close up the four point lead held by Steven DeLonjay in
the battle for the first Hornet Points Championship but his feature event win
didn’t help as DeLonjay picked up the win in his heat race offsetting his third
place in the main event. Levi Long crossed the line in second with Darren Morgan
in fourth and Sarah Woodhurst in fifth. Long took the other heat race win.
The Season Championship races for the Budweiser IMCA Late Models, Bombers and
Hornets will be this next Sunday, September 10. The IMCA Late Models and
Modifieds will not be running for points as the points season is over for their
divisions. Gates open at 4 with Hot Laps at 6 and racing at 6:30pm. Call the
Quincy Raceways Hotline at 217-224-4100 or the track office at 217-224-3843 or
