Burgtorf Tops IMCA Late Models at Quincy
By Jack Walbring
QUINCY, IL (May 27) - Mark Burgtorf, Michael Long, Rich Wagy Jr. and Joe
Gollaher all took feature event wins at Quincy Raceways on Sunday May 27 during
Bank of Quincy Night at the Races.
Jerry Weisenberger jumped into the early lead of the Budweiser IMCA Late Model
thirty lap main event and pulled to a comfortable lead until a caution flag
brought the field back together on the sixth lap. Mark Burgtorf had worked his
way into second and proceeded to put the pressure on Weisenberger but had to
wait until the lap thirteen to grab the lead away from the driver known as
“Hippie”. Burgtorf then set sail until Brian Kenning slipped by Weisenberger for
second on the fifteenth lap. Kenning reeled in Burgtorf and showed his nose on
the bottom groove giving Burgtorf the incentive to try just a little harder.
Burgtorf then increased his lead until Denny Woodworth got past Kenning for
second on the twenty fifth circuit. A caution flew on the next lap setting up a
battle to the finish with Woodworth coming up eight tenths of a second shy of
Burgtorf at the finish line. Woodworth settled for second followed by
Weisenberger in third, Kenning in fourth and Lonnie Bailey in fifth. Woodworth,
Bailey and Weisenberger took the heat race win while Bailey grabbed the
checkered flag in the Summy Tire and Auto Center Trophy Dash.
Michael Long picked up his third points paying feature event win in the Miller
Lite Modified Division. Long gained the lead on the seventh lap from David
Wietholder and pretty much had it his way until the checkered flag fell on the
twentieth lap of the scheduled twenty five laps. The checkered flag came out
early as several caution flags flew during the event bringing the time limit
into play. Wietholder crossed the finish line in second followed by Robbie Reed
in third, Tony Dunker in fourth and Wyatt Lance in fifth. Lance, Long,
Wietholder and Henry DeLonjay were the heat race victors as Long made it a clean
sweep for the night by capturing the Advance Trading Tony Dunker Trophy Dash.
Rich Wagy had to battle with Matt Burgtorf throughout the entire twenty lap
distance of the Hobby Stock main event but it was worth the effort as Wagy
picked up his first feature event win of the season in only his second start.
Burgtorf settled for second followed by Todd Riechert in third, Travis Booher in
fourth and Aaron Brocksieck in fifth. Wagy and Steve Carlin took the heat race
wins.
Joe Gollaher won the war of attrition in the Hornet main event as the early
leaders all dropped out with mechanical ills. Gollaher topped Levi Long in
second, new comer Tony Shankle in third, Zach Bruenger in fourth and Cody Griggs
in fifth. Steven DeLonjay and Lew Aikman were the heat race winners.
The next event on the Quincy Raceways schedule in the Poage Auto Plaza Night at
the Races on Sunday, June 3 followed by much anticipated Ideal Ready Mix Sprint
Invaders event on Wednesday, June 6. The Miller Lite Modifieds and Hobby Stocks
will be racing along with the sprints with the Mods running for a $500 payday
and the Hobby Stocks for $250 to win. Call the Quincy Raceways Hotline at
